Morgan Varnam: Personal Statement

As a teenager, like many, I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school. I had taken an
EMT course at the local vocational center with a few friends, mainly because you were allowed
to leave school early if you took a vocational class, but, it wasn’t long until I realized I genuinely
wanted to be a part of the medical field. During one of my clinical rounds at a hospital a patient
coded and I was put on the spot to perform CPR, and was lucky enough to be able to revive the
patient. I’ll never forget that feeling, the relief of knowing my CPR training paid off, and that
this person would be able to see their family again. Over those next few weeks I decided I
wanted to do more out of high school, and swore myself into the Army National Guard as a
combat medic at 17 years old. Thanks to the Army’s schooling benefits I am able to further my
education. It took me a few years to make the choice to get back into school, but ultimately
decided to set my goal in becoming a Registered Nurse.

Currently, I am in my first semester of courses at the State College of Florida. I am taking

courses to achieve an Associates in Science and Nursing. It is a new challenge to start college
courses after being out of school for four years, as well as being a new mother to my now six
month old son, but I am excited to further my education and obtain an amazing job. Outside of
school I am a current stay at home mom, with my part time work as a healthcare specialist
Sergeant for the Army National Guard. Prior to having my son I also worked as a Medical
Assistant at Helgemo and Liou Pediatrics.

I plan to obtain my Associates degree within the next two years, and pass nursing school. I plan
on working at a hospital or medical facility with my RN while hopefully continuing my
education and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I plan on working through several
different nursing floors/ specialties to gain experience so that I qualify to become a traveling
nurse.
