VFDs & SCADA for Industrial Motors

This document discusses variable frequency drives (VFDs) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for pumping applications. It explains that VFDs can control motor speed and torque to optimize operation for different load conditions. SCADA systems monitor real-time pump data to allow operators to quickly respond to changes, diagnose issues, and ensure pumps run optimally without damage. SCADA provides automated responses to changing conditions based on monitoring speed and optimizing pumps within maximum safe operating limits.

Variable frequency drive

 It enables the motor to run at any speed and torque within its operating
envelope
 It is programmed to control when to stop & start the motor, how fast it
should go under varying loads and how to most efficiently operate within
any torque limits
Type of VFDs

 Constant torque(CT) VFD: Used where there is linear relationship between

power required and equipment speed
 Variable torque(VT) VFD: Used where required equipment power is not
linear with respect to speed.

 VFD selection is solely determined by voltage & current capability

  The magnetic field created by voltage and subsequent current causes the
rotor to chase the magnetic field.
 The peak current the motor produces is often referred to as locked-rotor
current. This surge of current is what a PC pump relies on to be able to
overcome the pump’s starting torque.
  It is beneficial to choose a gear ratio that is as high as possible and place
maximum VFD frequency close to 85 hertz (Hz) because a PC pump requires
greater starting torque than running torque.

SCADA (supervisory control & data acquisition)

 It analyzes real time data and thus allows PCP experts to diagnose
problems, and operators to respond quickly to changing well conditions.
 SCADA host allows operators to respond quickly to changing well
conditions.
 Utilizing statistical process control the SCADA host allows operators to
determine when changes in field conditions occur.
 By monitoring the difference between the maximum allowable working
speed of the pump and the current speed it can be immediately
determined if the well is optimized.
 . Automatic reaction to changing field conditions prevents pump damage
