SUBJECT Mathematics

LESSON SUMMARY Students will practice solving addition and subtraction problems through a series of interactive
stations and will practice these skills with a set of flashcards students will make themselves.
OBJECTIVE.
What will your students be able to do?

Solve problems and equations, applying properties of operation when necessary, for addition and subtraction within 20.

ASSESSMENT
How will you know whether your students have made progress toward the objective?
How and when will you assess mastery?
Visual observation will be used to assess student’s progress during each group activity. Kahoot! will be used at the end of the
lesson to assess students on addition and subtraction skills.

COMMON CORE
How will you address Common Core standards?
1.0A Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Add and subtract within 20.

Work with addition and subtraction equations.

Common Core standards will be addressed by explaining how we are building off of what they learned in Kindergarten.
Explaining to the students that they have previously learned how to count forward, write numbers 0-20, and compare
numbers, and will now be taking those numbers and adding them together or subtracting one from the other.

DIFFERENTIATION
How will you differentiate your instruction to reach the diversity of learners in your classroom?
How will you address your English Learners?
List the specific strategies you will use.
Different types of content will be provided at 3 different stations. Both spoken and written directions will be given to students
before getting into groups, and at each station. Physical objects will be used at the stations. Support and modified speech, as
well as modeling the activities, will be given to English Learners. Providing opportunities for interaction in the groups for
English Learners will also be encouraged.

OPENING (10 minutes – suggested) MATERIALS/STRATEGIES

How will you communicate what is about to happen? How will you communicate how it will
happen?
How will you communicate its importance? How will you communicate connections to
previous & future lessons?
How will you engage students and capture their interest?

keep learning new things in math, as well as tying

future. Informing the students that in 2nd grade
they will need these skills to add and subtract
even bigger numbers. I will show the materials
used at each station to gain the student’s interests
and then assign them into their groups.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL (10 minutes – suggested)
What key points will you emphasize and reiterate?
How will you ensure that students actively take-in information?
How will you vary your approach to make information accessible to all students?
Which potential misunderstandings will you anticipate?
Why will students be engaged and interested?

a couple minutes, I will fade out my help with the
problems and have the students focus on solving
problems with their peers before moving onto the
stations. Visual observations will be made to
determine if students are understanding the
material. Potential misunderstandings can come
from combining the two properties in this lesson.
Students may be confused with the +/- when
solving problems. Allowing enough time for
students to grasp new material before moving on
is very important.
GUIDED PRACTICE (15 minutes – suggested)
How will you clearly state and model behavioral expectations?
How will you ensure that all students have multiple opportunities to practice?
How will you scaffold practice exercises from easy to hard?
How will you monitor and correct student performance?
Why will students be engaged and interested?

work on practicing their addition and subtraction
skills. One station will involve having students
watch an interactive video and solve problems
along with the video. The dice station will involve
students taking turns rolling 2 dice and adding the
numbers together, and then comparing answers.
The last station will have $1 monopoly money and
a worksheet with subtraction problems. Students
will use the money to help with solving the
problems, removing the money that is asked in the
problem, and then counting the remaining money
for the answer. Problems on the worksheets will
begin with simple, easy ones at the top, and will
be harder with bigger numbers as student’s
progress through the worksheet. Visual
observations will be made as well as moving from
station to station, checking the worksheets and
progress of students. Students will be engaged
and interested using the materials to help solve
their problems.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE ( 25 minutes – suggested)
How will you clearly state and model behavioral expectations?
In what ways will students attempt to demonstrate independent mastery of the objective?
How will you provide opportunities for extension?
Why will students be engaged and interested?

flash card as the activity continues. After each
equation is written on the board, students will
solve the problem and write the answer on the
back. As a class, we will all shout out the correct
answer for each equation after each student has
solved all of the equations. Students will have
cubes at their desks to help solve the problems, as
well as using the counting on strategy. Students
will demonstrate mastery when they answer all
equations correctly through Kahoot!. Students will
have additional time to solve the problems the
following day if needed. Students will be engaged
because this is a hands-on activity that requires
students to interact with the teacher. Students will
also be engaged because they will be playing a
game once they have finished the flashcards. This
activity will reflect a fun learning environment and
a way for the students to practice their addition
and subtraction skills. Walk around the classroom
to check on students and answer questions while
students work on this activity.
CLOSING ( 5 minutes – suggested)
How will students summarize what they learned?
How will students be asked to state the significance of what they learned?
How will you provide all students with opportunities to demonstrate mastery of (or progress
toward) the objective?

Ask questions to have students interact with the
teacher, such as what their favorite part of the
activity was or one thing they learned during the
activity. After having a couple of students share
their response with the class, students will turn to
a partner and share their answers to both
questions. Ask questions regarding what addition
and subtraction could be used for in real life, such
as cooking, money, and time.
HOMEWORK (if appropriate). How will students practice what they learned?

Students will watch an interactive video with a summary of the lesson about addition and subtraction and then have flashcards
on the screen at the end of the video where they select the correct answer after solving the problem. Around 15 minutes.
