Objectives

Students will learn other families look different from theirs.


Describe what other family types look like.

Materials and Equipment

 The book I am reading to the class (Who’s in a family)


 Construction paper
 Markers, crayons and colored pencils
 Sticky notes

Procedures

Introduction
I will read the students a book and then the will draw a picture of what their
family looks like and then they will share and they will be able to understand that all families
are different and not the same as their own.
Anticipatory set
As student enter the classroom there will be different colored sticky notes on
each student’s desk and I will ask them to write down one of their favorite
memories with their family. They will have 5-8 minutes to do this. Then they will
turn and talk to a peer about what they wrote.

Sequence of lesson
 I will call the students to the carpet in groups based on the color of their
sticky note.
 I will show them the book we are reading and ask them some questions.
What do you notice about the cover of the book?
What do you think this book is going to be about?
 I will read the book to them.
 After I read the book, I will have them turn and talk about their thoughts
on the book.
 Then have them go back to their seats but on the way back have them
pick up 1 piece of construction paper and some markers, crayons or
colored pencils.
 I will explain to them what they will be doing with the materials.
 I want them to draw a picture of their family and label who each person
is. They will have 20-25 minutes to do this.
 When they are done, I will put them in little groups based on who they
are sitting around, and they will share their pictures.
Conclusion
I will give them another sticky note and they have to write 1 thing about
someone else’s family that they learned that us different than theirs that they liked, and they
have to stick it to the door as the leave.
