Supreme Court Cases How do they apply to you?

Name the Supreme Court case that would apply if you were in these situations.

1. New Jersey v. TLO - The school went into your locker looking for drugs but instead found
a vape. They suspended you for 2 weeks as a result even though you were not using it at
the time.

2. Tinker v. Des Moines - Your brother and many others at school love Donald Trump. You
don’t care for Donald Trump’s politics. You decide to protest by wearing a red armband
with “I and R” on it (Impeachment and Removal). Your teacher kicks you out of class saying
that it is disruptive, and your principal suspends you because you refuse to take it off.

3. Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier - The school newspaper article that you worked so hard on was
pulled from the final copy because it talked about bullies in school and how to deal with
them. The principal said he didn’t think it was proper.

4. Miranda v. Arizona - You were arrested for breaking and entering. The police did not
read you your rights and interrogated you for 5 hours, never letting you leave the police
station or call your parents.

5. Bakke v. California - You applied to college and were not accepted. Later you learned that
the school had a quota system designed for students from other countries to come to that
school.

6. Texas v. Johnson - Friends of yours decided to go to a rally that was against the World
Trade Organization. They took a flag and burned it in protest. They were all arrested.

7. Gideon v. Wainwright - You are very poor. You were arrested for stealing bread from a
store to try to feed your family. It is the third time you are arrested. You have no money for
a lawyer.

8. Mapp v. Ohio - While playing a marathon session of “Fortnite” the police break in with a
piece of paper they say is a warrant, to search for drugs. They don’t find any drugs, but they
do find what they call “bomb-making materials.” You know it is for a science project you are
doing for chemistry. You are arrested.

9. Engel v. Vitale - On the morning of the first day of school the principal asks everyone to
stand for the pledge of allegiance. After that he asks everyone to stand and say the new
school prayer. Everyone who refuses is sent to the office.

10. Lemon v. Kurtzman - After 8 years in Fraser public schools and living in the Fraser
community, your parents decide to send you to a private religious school. Unfortunately,
you do not have transportation. The public schools refuse to help you because you are
going to a religious school.
11. Epperson v. Arkansas - Mr. Haxer refused to teach his biology class about evolution
because he was religious and because other students in the class were religious. He thought
that there was a state law about it.

12. Gitlow v. New York - Jake gave a speech about sexually explicit material in front of the
whole student body. He was suspended for two weeks. Jake complained “What about my
free speech”?
