To be a feminist is simply to believe that everybody should be treated equally,

regardless of sex. It means you think that there should be equality of the sexes economically,
socially, politically and personally. When you put it like that, it’s surely difficult for anybody
to deny being a feminist. But for such a simple concept, it is often dramatically
misunderstood.

Perhaps the most common objection to feminism is the argument that it is
unnecessary, because equality has already been achieved. The easiest place to begin is by
disproving the notion that gender inequality no longer exists. This is simple enough. Globally,
according to the United Nations, at least one in three women is beaten, coerced into sex or
otherwise abused by an intimate partner in the course of her lifetime. In 2016, a UNESCO
report estimated that over 130m girls worldwide were out of school.

It is undeniable that these problems, from wage inequality to so-called “honour”

violence, female genital mutilation to workplace sexual harassment, disproportionately affect
women. Some sceptics will argue that feminism remains problematic because its true
objective is not to achieve equality, but to advantage women at all costs, to the detriment of
men. I urge these sceptics to take any issue that particularly affects men. It is often closely
connected to the sort of outdated gender stereotypes that feminists are committed to
tackling.

The tragically high male suicide rate, for example, cannot be divorced from the fact
that men are far less likely than women to seek support for mental health problems. When
we bring men up in a world that teaches them it’s not manly to talk about their feelings, we
damage them terribly. And gender stereotypes don’t exist in a vacuum. They are two sides of
a coin. In this case, the other side is the common notion that women are over-emotional,
hormonal and hysterical; a cliché which disadvantages women in the workplace. Feminists
are eager to dismantle these stereotypes, in all their forms. So, tackling gender inequality at
its root, as feminists seek to do, would help everybody, regardless of sex. (350 words)

8. Read the passage and answer the questions at the end of the passage.
India became home to the world’s first-ever thermal battery plant, that was
inaugurated in Andhra Pradesh. This plant aims to create a new energy storage form that is
expected to have commercial applications, while also maintaining a low carbon footprint, and
being less dependent on external factors like weather.

Thermal batteries, use thermal energy to operate, i.e., the energy created by
temperature differences. For that to happen, a thermal battery consists of two parts: a cool
zone known as sink, and a hot source called source. Both these sides consist of compounds
known as phase-changing materials (PCMs), which can change their state of matter on the
basis of a physical/chemical reaction. Thermal battery technology was patented in India by
Dr Patrick Glynn in 2016.
Given the positives from thermal battery, its main application lies in the possible
integration with power grids, supporting public transport systems and telecom grids. This
could help solve power issues in remote areas, and also address rising energy requirements
from regional or national grids. Power-intensive industries will also be major beneficiaries,
and the transformation will mean reduced dependence on fossil fuels for energy. Telecom
infrastructure is also a target area, as thermal batteries will help maintain signal strength and
network connectivity. This, in turn, could also improve internet penetration and ultra-fast
mobile services.
Another area that could receive impetus from thermal batteries is that of electric
vehicles. With thermal battery technology, car makers could consider going green, and deploy
clean energy at minimal maintenance costs. At the same time, e-vehicles could also derive
charging power from stations that run on thermal batteries.
