The Wind and the Leaves

“Come little leaves,” said the wind one day,
“Come over the meadows with me and play.
Put on your dresses of red and gold
For summer is gone, and the days grow cold.”
Soon as the leaves heard the winds loud call,
Down they came fluttering, one and all.
Over the brown field then they danced and flew
Singing the soft little songs they knew,
Dancing and whirling, the little leaves went,
Winter had called them, and they were content.
Soon fast asleep on their earthy beds,
The snow laid a coverlet over their heads.

A) Answer the following questions: 1x3=3

a) What did the wind ask the leaves to do?
b) Why were the leaves so satisfied to come down?

Email
Electronic mail is most commonly referred to as email or e-mail. Email generally refers to a method of
exchanging digital messages from a sender to one or more recipients. It is distributed by electronic means
from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network. It is claimed that people started sending
and receiving email from 1993. However, it has recently been popular in our country. Today’s email
systems are based on a store-and –forward model. Email servers accept, forward, deliver and store
messages. Neither the users nor their computers are required to be online simultaneously. They need to
connect to a server for as long as it takes to send or receive messages. Thus, email is an information and
communication technology. In this technology, users use email differently, based on how they think about
it. There are many software platforms available to send and receive messages. Popular email platforms
include Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!, Mail, Outlook, and many others.

Human trafficking is one of the cross-cutting issues. It is also a worldwide serious concern. Human
trafficking is an illegal trade of human beings for sexual exploitation, forced labour, extraction of organs or
tissues and so on. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), human
trafficking is the recruitment or transportation of persons by means of the threat or use of force or other
forms of abduction, fraud or deception or for the purpose of exploitation. It knows no gender, age race
and boundaries.
Traffickers prey on the most vulnerable members of the society. In order to deceive, first, they take help
of local people to identify such families. They may provide economic incentive and financial loans to their
friends, relatives, family, spouse or even parents. At times, most victims are lured to promises of better
jobs or well-paid job in cities, false marriages and proposals, easy money, dream of sophisticated life and
other. Victims of earthquake, flood, war and epidemics can be easily smuggled.
Most victims are involved in slavery like practices, and kept in prison like environment. It is because they
can be physically and sexually abused. They have to work long hours without any rest or recreation. They
never get medical facility when they fall sick. They are either paid less or their earnings are withheld with
prolonged indebtedness to traffickers.
Our constitution has preserved the right to freedom. Therefore, we must fight against trafficking of
persons. In addition to legislation, the Nepal government, the Ministry of women, Children and welfare,
various INGOs and many other organizations in Nepal are dedicated to combat human trafficking.
If we suspect anyone involving in such illegal activities, we have to report police or any member of
concerned organizations. We can also use helpline numbers anytime to inform about victims or
traffickers. Our little effort will be a great help to control violation of human rights.

1. Topic of the Study

"Speaking Difficulties of Class-9 Students in English Classroom"
2. Background of the Study:
There are four language skills of English Language. They are listening, speaking, reading and
writing. All these four language skills are interrelated to each other. The main purpose of
teaching and learning language is to enable the learners to communicate, share ideas, interact
with each other, and convey thoughts, intentions, wishes and information and to understand
the text of the language. It is, therefore, every classroom activities will be directed towards
achieving those skills/activities which are also known as listening, speaking, reading and
writing skills. These four language skills can be classified into two broad categories. They
are receptive and productive skills. Speaking and writing involve language production and
are therefore often referred to as productive skills. On the other hand, listening and reading
involve receiving message and are therefore often referred to as receptive skills.
The main purpose of all language skills is to make the learners use English language in
accordance with their purpose. Most of the learners want to develop communicative
competence in English language. They want to use English in different contexts fluently
without any hesitation. English language is taught as a compulsory subject in all the school of
Nepal starting from grade one and up to Grade 12. Undoubtedly, English is the means of
communication globally and is also the major world language. So, teaching speaking is one
of the major skills of language to develop communicative competence.
Teaching speaking is much more practical activity. Most of the time, the teacher should
involve and engage to the students in practical activities from simply ideas sharing activity to
acting different roles like dramatization and simulation. This means classroom activities
should be designed in such a way that it reflects real life activities.
Teaching speaking skill in a second or foreign language involves in the development of a
particular kind of communication skill. It has also received a significant position for the
school level students. It is in the sense that it is the speaking ability on the basis of which our
guardians and parents in particular and society in general measure the learning achievement
of their children. What they do is if their children could not speak English fluently and easily,
they express their negative attitudes to the whole educational system of that very school.
Therefore, this skill has to receive important position in teaching English language
classroom. The main purpose of teaching speaking skill is to make the students able to share
their ideas, opinions, feelings with each other. We can't expect fluent and spontaneous
conversation on the part of students until and unless we provide them opportunities to speak
in the classroom and outside the classroom. It is also true that to have a good command over
English, learners should have large number of vocabularies stored in their minds. Therefore,
adequate number of vocabularies and practice of speaking no doubt help develop the
speaking ability on the part of students. Moreover, first language interference, pronunciation
problems, big classroom size, low exposure, poor English background of the students,
syllabus and examination system, excessive use of first language by teacher create a lot of
difficulties in speaking for learners..
3. Statement of the Problem
Teaching speaking is not easy task. In the context of Nepal, unwillingness to speak English is
a problem commonly found in English language classroom because they have already
acquired one or two languages and there is lack of English speaking environment. Mostly in
government-aided schools or Nepali medium schools of Nepal, it is often felt that teachers
and students overuse their mother tongue in English classroom. This, in result, minimizes the
exposure to English. So, students cannot develop good competency of using language.
Instead they always feel easy to use Nepali in English classroom and teacher also feels easy it
easy to teach English through Nepali medium. As a result, students are having a lot of
speaking difficulties. The problem of speaking lies with the teaching process or with the
students or with materials itself. The degree of difficulty often differs according to the
situation and the background of the students. The following are some problems which I have
faced as a English teacher in course of teaching in class-9.
Students feel difficulty in speaking English due to their mother tongue. They feel easy to
speak their mother tongue even in English classroom.
The students get speaking difficulty due to pronunciation problems.
Students show unwillingness and low participation in English speaking activities.
We have speaking problem among students due to large class size. No every students get
chance to express their thoughts, ideas, feelings etc.
Poor English background and English environment students and teachers are facing speaking
problem.
So, it is not easy to overcome speaking difficulties in English classroom due to different
factors and to develop communicative competence among English language learners. Some
of the students in speaking class never seem to take part in speaking activities. Implementing
special strategies, the speaking difficulties of the learners are to be solved through action
research.
Speaking seems one of the most important in language learning. People who know a
language are referred to as speaker of that language as if speaking includes all other kinds of
knowing and many foreign language learners are primarily interested in learning to speak.
Some teachers get very involved with their students during a speaking activity and want to
join in too.
4. Objectives of the Study:
The main objectives of the study were as follows:
 To find out the better teaching speaking strategies which involve all the students in
speaking activities.
 To identify the situation of English speaking ability of class-9 students of Baghbhairab
school.
 To find out the different strategies to develop speaking skill of the students.
 To develop willingness among students to use English language in different context.
 To increase pass percentage of the students in English language.
5. Periods of the Study
The period of implementing the study began on 7th Falgun and lasted for one month.

6. Process of Collecting and Analyzing Data

I found out and implemented several tools and processes of collecting data to carry out this
study. I employed several speaking activities in the classroom and developed different
strategies plans to enrich speaking skill of the students. Tools and processes like questionnaire,
interview, dialogue, audio clip/file, authentic conversations, listening and speaking activities,
dramatization, role play activities, observations, project work, problem-solving exercises,
observations, vocabulary developing games are employed in the class. All students of class-9
of Baghbhairab secondary school were selected for this study. In my class, almost all students
try to reply their answer in Nepali. They were habituated in using Nepali language even in
English classroom. They seemed to be very reluctant in using English language. If I
encouraged them to speak English and to reply in English of teacher's questions; they simply
said that they felt hesitation and they could not reply through English. They only wanted to

pass exam but not very interested in spoken English due to low storage of words, pronunciation
difficulty, grammatically inaccurate sentence structure etc. To overcome all these speaking
difficulties of class-9 students, I carried out the action research. I used the following steps of
action research to bring positive learning changes and achievements of the students in speaking
skill.
6.1.1. Planning: Developing good speaking proficiency in foreign language is very difficult
task. It is very challenging to be fluent speaker of second language due to various reasons. The
main problem of my class was that the students were very reluctant to participate in classroom
interaction. Students feel difficulty to utter different expressions of English without hesitation
even in class 9. Speaking skill is one of the most important and primary language skill to
develop communicative competence in learners. But most of the students in speaking class
never seem to take part in speaking activities. So, through this study, I tried to find the factors
influencing speaking skill of class-9 students and developed the strategies to be implemented
that can improve the students' speaking skill.
I used the following strategic plans/activities to enhance speaking ability of the students in
English language classroom.
1. Activity no.1: Picture Description activity given in the textbook

2. Activity no 2: Pair work to practice language functions

6.1.2. Implementation of the Plan

After preparing above strategic plans, I implemented the designed speaking activities in the
classroom. I always made detailed lesson plan of these strategic plans. Initially, classroom
activities were conducted by assigning speaking activities in whole class, in group work and in
pair work. Students are encouraged to participate in different speaking activities. I presented
them a lot of day to day conversations which could develop their speaking skill. I explained the
expression of asking and giving information asked them to make dialogue based on the class
orally. I implemented different speaking activities in the classroom.

6.1.3. Observation

When I observed the speaking activities of the students of class-9, I found that the students were
very much unwilling to participate in speaking activities. Initially, I found the students were very
reluctant to take part in speaking activities. When, I watched students' participation in speaking
activities, they were hardly participating in different speaking activities. Only few students tried
to express their ideas but the expressions were no grammatically correct and complete sentences.
In short, after all no significant change and progress in speaking skill was seen. The students felt
difficulty to take part in speaking activities.
