Planning your itinerary Choosing your destination
Cost tends to be a key determining factor in choosing a travel destination. Countries can be
roughly classed in three cost tiers. Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, the US

a group tour (p117) is the best option for you.

Timing it right
If travel isn’t dictated by money, it is dictated by time. There are several
factors to consider when it comes to timing your trip right. Firstly, it’s
important to ensure your chosen destinations are feasible to visit during
your travel window. Trying to squeeze four European countries into a
single week may leave you feeling like you never properly experienced
any of them, while allocating two weeks in Paris may leave you feeling
restless after a week.
It’s also important to consider the ideal time to travel to your chosen
destination – travelling to the Philippines during typhoon season may not

bode well for a diving or hiking holiday, while visiting a Muslim country
during Ramadan might make it difficult for you to find food during the
day. Perhaps the region you wish to visit is politically unstable, and your
insurer won’t cover you if you decide to travel there at a certain time – or
perhaps you suffer from hay fever and your intended destination will be
in the middle of flowering season.

Planning your itinerary 16 17 the solo travel handbook

TOP tip
‘When drawing up a travel itinerary, always check
whether any major events are taking place during
your intended stay. This can include everything
from music festivals and sporting events to
public holiday celebrations, all of which can
significantly bump up the costs of both flights and
accommodation due to high demand. Travelling at
peak times, such as local school holidays, is likely
to have a similar effect. If you’re not travelling
to attend an event or because you’re a teacher
on school break, your wallet will thank you for
altering your dates!’  Stephanie Parker, travel blogger,

MONEY AND BUDGETING 24 25 the solo travel handbook

$ Setting a budget strategy: $ How to avoid the solo surcharge
the 50/30/20 rule remastered There are few worse insults to the solo traveller than being faced with the prospect of having to pay a single
supplement when booking your trip. This dreaded surcharge – which can be as high as 100% – is imposed
You may have heard of the 50/30/20 everyday budgeting rule, which suggests you allocate when one person occupies a room that is able to accommodate two, so you basically end up paying for
50% of your income to essential costs (rent, bills, etc), allocate 30% to ‘wants’ (that new your invisible companion. Avoid having to fork out for this cost by following these handy tips:
pair of shoes you’ve had your eye on), and allocate 20% to savings. When saving for a trip,
this rule can be flipped to help you save more money, faster, says Bessie Hassan, money
expert at international comparison website finder.com.
‘There’s no one-size-fits-all when setting a budget strategy, but allocating 50% of your
earnings towards essential costs, 30% towards travel savings, and 20% for “wants” is
a conservative approach that should see you grow your savings balance,’ says Hassan.

The vessel: choosing your luggage
When choosing luggage, first consider your destination and the type of travel you plan on
doing. If it's backpacking around India, your trusty wheelie suitcase isn’t going to cut it; if you’re
jetting away for a quick city break, your big old dusty backpack probably isn’t ideal.
Whatever type of luggage you choose, opt for lightweight and inconspicuous – designer luggage
may make you more vulnerable to thieves. Don’t just consider cabin baggage size and weight
restrictions when purchasing luggage, but also the weight you are comfortable carrying. If you’ve
narrowed a new purchase down to several options, opt for the one with with the best warranty.

‘You might think taking a tour is beneath you, but I'll let you in on a secret:
sometimes travelling with a group can be the safest way to explore a particular

alone. In a handful of countries like Iran and Bhutan, travelling as part of a group

So, you want to volunteer?
Signing up for a volunteer project abroad is a great way to ease
into solo travel, but it’s crucial to do your research. Sadly, many

opportunities with children in the developing world, says James
Sutherland, international communications coordinator of
Friends-International, which runs child-protection initiative
ChildSafe (thinkchildsafe.org).
‘If you are unqualified in childcare and lack other skills (such
as medical training) that are not available locally, would you be
able to do this work in your own country? The answer is “no”,’
says Sutherland. ‘However well-meaning your intentions, you
actually run the real risk of causing further harm to the children.’
Orphanage visits are also discouraged by child-protection
experts. ‘Many orphanages are run as businesses that have
little or no child protection policies or procedures in place,’ says
Sutherland. ‘Numerous clinical studies have also highlighted that
a revolving door of visitors to institutionalised children is harmful to
the children’s long-term emotional and psychological development.’
That’s not to say you can’t help. ‘If you do have transferable

skills, consider spending your time transferring them to local staff,’

says Sutherland. ‘This will have a long-term and sustainable
positive impact long after you’ve headed home.’
Sutherland also suggests directing your support to local
organisations that run initiatives helping children and their
families. This could be community projects making and selling
souvenirs, social businesses or restaurants that train local youth.
There are some fantastic opportunities out there, but you
should be sceptical about opportunities that allow unskilled
travellers to interact with captive wildlife. Visit responsibletravel.com

wildlife and communities.

– a fair chunk of them on her own. From traipsing between the hawker
centres of Singapore to marvelling at the breathtaking landscapes of
Australia’s Red Centre, Sarah’s solo travel adventures have been amongst
her most rewarding, and she hopes this book – which includes many
of the tricks she has learned along the way – will inspire a new legion of
solo travellers to find out what they’ve been missing out on. Formerly
a destination editor at Lonely Planet, Sarah now writes for travel titles
in several continents and manages a sustainable travel-focused blog.
