I. MOTIVATION
The Ancestral House
Every summer we always visit our ancestral house in Brgy. Maasin. It is a big stone house in the middle
of Grandfather ‘s coffee farm. The house has tour wide bedrooms with a large veranda (balcony) near the airy
comedor (dining room). Antique memorabilia (souvenirs) are to be found on every corner and furniture tops.
Everything in the house has a very interesting story to tell. We usually gather in the veranda after dinner. We
play a game we call “Favorite Souvenir”. ln this game we take turns in mentioning our favorite souvenir and the
story attached to it. Grandmother s favorite was the sillon (rocking chair) because her mother used to rock her in
this chair while singing the lullaby when she was a baby. Grandfather's favorite was the Sto. Niño because this
was his ninong's gift when he reached the age of 7.
At night time, one can relax here enjoying the fragrance of ilangilang and dama de noche. During
summer vacation, I stay in the veranda most of the time. From here I have a full view of our neighbor's lovely
daughter who feeds the chickens early in the morning. For our family, this house is a living album of who we
are now.
Let’s Think it Over!
In what way is the old ancestral house like a family album?

When we learn about our ancestors, we learn something about ourselves. Their customs, values, and
practices had a part in making us the persons we are today.
II. PRESENTATION
The Word tells You
God makes known to us his gift of salvation. We learn about this through Sacred Scripture. Just like our
ancestors, when we learn from Sacred Scripture, we do and obey it. Our learnings from it have great part of our
lives specially as a Christian. Now, Let’s find out how.
Preaching the Good News
First letter from St. Paul to the Corinthians
Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and
on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to
you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day
according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to
more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some
have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as
to one abnormally born. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle,
because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God, I am what I am, and his grace to me was not
without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
Whether, then, it is I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

III. DISCUSSION
LEARNING THE MESSAGE
Spreading the Gospel According to Scriptures
Stories about our ancestors fascinate and enlighten us. These stories give us interesting peeks into how
they lived their lives then. They also help us explain some practices and beliefs that we hold on to as revealed to
us in two ways: by people who came in contact with our ancestors, our parents.
Which were recorded and available to us now in the _______________________________________________.
What is true of our personal life is also true of our faith life. We come to know of our faith, its
beginnings, developments, and demands through the testimonies of men and women who had the privilege of
receiving and hanging on, from generation to generation, to God's message of love. These testimonies are
contained in Scriptures and Oral Tradition.
In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul mentioned the efforts he and the other disciples exerted in
preaching the Good News (gospel). Paul preached what he had received from Jesus Christ. What Christ said and
did are all in accordance with the Scriptures. Paul's mention of the Scriptures emphasizes that it is an
indispensable tool in the task of preaching and spreading the gospel.
The S_________________________ is an indispensable tool in the task of preaching and spreading
the Gospel.
Making God's Gift Known to All Men
Towards the end of the Gospel of Matthew, we are told that Jesus summoned His apostles to "preach the
gospel to all nations." This Gospel had been promised beforehand by the prophets and was fulfilled in the
person of Jesus.
To fulfill Christ's mandate, the apostles handed on the Gospel in two ways:
1. Orally- The apostles handed on the Christian community what they themselves received either from
Christ Himself, from His way of life and works or from the promptings of the Holy Spirit. The oral
transmission of the Gospel was done by the apostles, by the spoken word of their preaching, by the kind
of life they lived, and by the institution they established.
2. In Writing-The apostles and those who were closely associated with them put down in writing the
message of salvation under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
To make sure that the gospel is perpetuated through the ages, the apostles left bishops as their successors. The
apostles gave their successors their own positions teaching authority so that the apostolic preaching can be
preserved in a continuous line of succession until the end of time. "This living transmission accomplished in the
Holy Spirit, is called Tradition, since it is distinct from Sacred Scripture, though closely connected to it" (cf. DV
8)
The d_______________es of Christ fulfilled His command to “preach the Gospel to all nations” orally
and I writing.
The Relationship Between Tradition and Sacred Scripture
Tradition and Sacred Scripture are intimately linked since both of them come from a single repository of
faith-Revelation. "Tradition can be taken either as the process by which Divine Revelation, coming from Jesus
Christ through the apostles, is communicated and unfolded in the community or the Church, or as the content of
the revelation so communicated (CFC 83) while Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in
writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit" (DV 9).
Although these two can be defined separately, it is impossible to understand one without the other. It is
because "as Sacred Scripture grew from Tradition, so it is interpreted by Tradition-the life, worship, and
teaching of the Church. Tradition depends on Scriptures as its normative record of Christian origins and
identity, while Scripture requires the living Tradition of the Church to bring its message to the fresh challenges
and changing contexts confronting Christians in every age” (CFC 84).
The living T_______________ion of the Church, which includes the inspired word of God in
Sacred Scripture, is the channel through which God’s self-revelation comes to us”(CFC 83)
Let’s Check this out:
1. The scripture, the testimonies, tradition have been received by us from the a ______________es and their
s__________rs.
2. The message of salvation is received orally and in writing by the power of the H___________________.
The Church and the Sacred Deposit of Faith
The Scripture is the "Book of the People of God," in short, the Church's book. It is a fact that the Bible
was written by the People of God, for the people, by the people about their experience of God. Scriptures
therefore, must always be interpreted in relation to life, prayer, preaching, and meditation of the people of God-
and the history of this authentic interpretation is part of Tradition. It is therefore easy to see how Tradition,
Sacred Scripture, and the Church are linked together. Collectively, although each in a distinct manner, they
contribute effectively to the salvation of human persons.
In interpreting the Scripture, the Church considers at least four factors (CFC 92-96).
1. First, the human author-This means that in interpreting the Scripture, It is important to consider the
particular mind frame of the inspired human author. Thus, a working knowledge of the social, economic,
and religious conditions of the authors in their particular historical contexts is a necessity.
2. Second, the text itself-The Church, in interpreting Scriptures also looks into the text itself, the literary
form (e.g. parable, poems, historical narratives, or prophetic oracles) which the author used in the text.
Furthermore, the Church also looks at the text in the context of the entire Bible and never in isolation.
3. Third, the readers/hearers-In seeking what the Scripture text means for the readers/hearers, the Church
considers the witness offered in the lives of holy men and women in the Church through the centuries.
Therefore, any authentic interpretation of the text for the Christian community must not digress or move
away from the tradition of meaning that has grown out of the texts' impact on Christian communities
through the ages.
4. Fourth, the common horizon - which first unites all the books of the Bible into a basic unity, and second,
links together the context of the Scriptural text and its tradition with our present reading context today.
This horizon is none other than the new and eternal covenant which God has established with us through
His Son, Jesus Christ.
In int____________________ing the Scripture, we seek truth that God wishes to communicate to us
today. In this, we are guided by the living teachings of the Church (cf CFC 96).
