TLP # 1: Representing a Functions Teacher: Maryland V. Pasilan
Objectives: Through the discussion and examples, the student will be able to:
1. identify what is a function;
2. illustrates the graph of a function represents real life situations using
functions.
I. MOTIVATION
With the given sets of data, Set A= Country, Set B= Capital, map according to its capital.

Set A Set B

Thailand Tokyo
India Bangkok
China Manila
Taiwan Seoul
Qatar New Delhi
Japan Taipei
South Korea Doha
Philippines Vientiane
Laos Jakarta
Indonesia Beijing

II. PRESENTATION
The relationship of two sets is what we called relation. 1 ____________ is set of ordered pairs.[Ex.:
{(3,4),(7,1}] In a relation we have two data; inputs and outputs. Relation has a special type which is
functions. In given activity above, Set 2 _______________ is the domain and set
3
_________ is the range.
Can we say that the relationship is a function?4 ___________________________________

III. DISCUSSION

In mathematics and other discipline, functions occur repeatedly in different forms.

For example:
PAG-ASA records show the temperature over a month period in the form of a graph. The graph shows
the temperature that corresponds to each given day.

Two sets of data are the temperature and 5 ____________ . The input data is 6 ___________ and output
is the 7 _______________. In formal definition of function, the set of inputs is called domains, which
serve as entry value to the function rule, and the set of outputs is called range.
A 8 _____________ is a relation in which each element of the domain corresponds to exactly one
element of the range.

Relation A Relation R
I
L 4 4
O 5 M 5
V 6 A 6
E 8 T 8
M 3 H 3
A 2 2
T Domain Range
H
Domain Range

Relation A: {(I,4),(L,5),(O,6),(V,8),(E,3),(M,6),(A,2),(T,8),(H,4)}
Relation R:{(M,6),(A,8),(A,3),(T,4),(H,5),(H,2)}
Are both relation a function? 9 ____________________________
Relation A is a function, since each element in the domain {I,L,O,V,E,M,A,T,H} is assigned to
one element in the range. Even though the range element 4 is assigned to two elements of the domain, I
and H, it is still a function since each element of the domain is assigned to only one element of the range
while relation R is not a function. In relation R, A is assigned to two numbers, 8 and 3, and H is assigned
to 5 and 2.
Example:
Which of the following sets of ordered pairs are function?
a. A = {(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(4,5)}
b. B = {(1,1),(2,2),(3,3),(4,4)}
c. C= {(1,0),(0,1),(-1,0),(0,-1)}
d. D = {(-2,4),(-1,1),(0,0),(1,1),(2,4)}
Solution:
a. A is function, because the first elements or the domain is used once in the set.
b. 10________________________________________________________________________________
c. C is not function.Why? 11_____________________________________________________________
d. D is a function.Why? 12 ______________________________________________________________
Reminders: If we were given a set of ordered pairs (ex: {(I,4),(L,5),(O,6),(V,8)}, we can easily
determine whether the relation is a function or not by simply looking if each first element or the domain
is used only ONCE in the set.
Domain the abscissa or in the x-axis. Range is the coordinate or in the y-axis of the graph.
Functions are often denoted by any letter of the English Alphabets or Greek character. What we
commonly use is the f. If f is a function x is an element in its domain, then, to each element x , the
function f associates exactly one value to be denoted by f(x), is read as “ f of x”. A synonymous notation
y can also be used, that is, y=f(x).
Graph of a Function
How to test a graph if it is function or not?
Vertical Line Test
- A graph represents a function if an only if no vertical line intersects the graph in more than
one point.
Example:

Graph A: Not relation Graph B: Relation

Why does the Graph A is not a relation and the other one is a relation?

Graphing a function
In graphing a function, say f, first, find all ordered pairs that satisfy f. Then, plot the corresponding
points on a Cartesian Plane, draw a smooth curve that will pass through all the points from left to right.
Graphically, the domain of a function
y=f(x) is the projection of the graph
of f on the axis, and the range of the
function is the projection of the graph
on the axis.
Example

Sketch the graph of f(x)=2x-3 on the domain:

a. {x|x = -2,-1,0,3,4}

Solution:
The graph of the function f on the domain {-2.-1,0,3,4} is the
set of points represented by the ordered pairs (-2,-7),(-1,-
5),(0,-3),(3,3), and (4,5).

The range of f on the domain {-2,-1,0,3,4} is R={-7,-5,-3,3,5}.

b. {x|-2≤x<4}
Solution:
The graph of the function f on the domain -2≤x≤4, a segment
whose end points are (-2,-7) and (4,5).

The range of f on the domain -2≤x≤4 is R={f(x)|-7≤f(x)≤5}

Where did I get the set of range? _________________________________________________
IV. CHECKING UP
A. Determine the set of inputs and the set of outputs for each function. Underline the inputs and encircle
the outputs.
1. The amount of battery charge of a cellular phone is a function of the number of hours of use.
2. An athelete’s shoe size is a function of the athlete’s length of foot.
3. The amount of water on graduated cylinder displaced by same-size marbles is a function of the
number of marbles.
B. Which of the following ordered pairs are function?
1. A={(6,6),(4,4),(2,2),(0,0),(-2,-2)}
2. B={(8,-4),(6,-2),(4,0),(2,2),(0,4)}
3. C={(5,4),(3,4),(6,4),..}
