Intro to Algebraic Graphs

Graphs of functions can be represented visually using ordered pairs in a Cartesian plane. A relation is a set of ordered pairs where the domain is the first coordinates and the range is the second. A function is a relation where each domain value corresponds to only one range value. Linear functions have exponents of 1 and can be written as f(x)=ax+b. Quadratic functions are of the form f(x)=ax^2+bx+c and their graphs are parabolas. Exponential functions have the form f(x)=b^x and their graphs approach but never touch the x-axis as x increases or decreases. Logarithmic functions are the inverse of exponential functions and can be written as y

ALGEBRA

GRAPHS
OF
FUNCTIONS

In mathematics, the graph of a function f is the collection of all ordered pairs (x, f(x)).

Informally, if x is a real number and f is a real function, graph may mean the graphical representation of this
collection, in the form of a line chart: a curve on a Cartesian plane

RELATION

It is a set of ordered pairs.

The Domain of a relation is the set of first coordinates.

The Range is the second coordinates.

FUNCTION

Is a relation in which each element of the Domain corresponds to exactly one element of the Range.

VERTICAL LINE TEST

A graph represents a function if and only if no vertical line intersects the graph in more than one point.

LINEAR FUNCTION

A linear equation is an equation at the first degree.

Linear functions are functions that have x as the input variable, and x has an exponent of only 1.

A linear function is a function that can be written in the form

f(x)= ax + b,

where a and b are real numbers with a and f(x) not both equal to zero
GRAPHING LINEAR FUNCTIONS BY POINT-PLOTTING METHOD
The Point-Plotting Method of graphing f(x)= mx + b
1. Make as table of values showing three or more ordered pairs that are solutions of the equations.
2. Plot these points on the rectangular coordinate system.
3. Since the graph of a linear function is a line, connect the points with a line.

QUADRATIC FUNCTION

f(x) = a

A quadratic function is any equation of the form

+ bx + c

Where a, b, and c are real numbers and a 0.

The graph of any quadratic function is called parabola.

VERTEX FORM OF A QUADRATIC EQUATION

The equation function

f(x) = a(x - h

+ k, a0

Is written in the vertex form. The graph is a parabola whose vertex is the point (h , k). The parabola is symmetrical to the
line x = h. If a > 0, the parabola opens upward; if a < 0, the parabola opens downward.
PROPERTIES OF EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND THEIR GRAPHS
Let f(x) =

, b > 1 and b

1. The domain is the set of real numbers.

2. The range is the set of positive real numbers. In symbols,
this means that for each x R, > 0
3. If x = 0,
=1
If x > 0,

>1

If x < 0, 0 <

<1

4. As x increases,

also increases. This implies that if m, n R, and m > n then

>

5. The graph approaches but does not reach the x-axis.

ASYMPTOTE
-

An asymptote of a curve is a line that the curve approaches more and more closely, that is, the distance
between the line and the curve approaches zero as the graph moves out farther along the line.

LOGARITHMIC FUNCTION

A logarithmic function is the inverse of the exponential function.

It is an equation in the form of

If b is any number such that b>0 and b0 and x>0 then,

is equivalent to
We usually read this as log base b of x.
