Subjective and Objective Views of Morality
(Study Guide or Reflective Writing)

1. Objective morality is the belief that morality is universal, meaning that it isn't up
for interpretation. Meanwhile, subjective morality is means that each individual
has his or her own sense of right and wrong.

2. Objective Morality Examples:

 Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States.
 Salads have fewer calories than cheesecake.
 I (in my 60’s) am able to run a sub-four-minute mile.
 The earth is the center of the solar system.
 The Los Angeles Dodgers will win the World Series this year.

Subjective Morality Examples:

 My newborn baby is the cutest child in the entire city.
 Stage plays are more entertaining than movies.
 Chocolate ice cream tastes better than vanilla.

3. I think that it would be objective morality considering that we believe in God who
is the ultimate source of morality. Objective morality comes from a transcendent
source, even though some accounts of objective morality do not depend on the
belief of God.

4. Good reasons stated in the Case of Objective Morality:

 Objective morality best accounts for the way we view moral reformers and moral
progress
 Objective morality makes the best sense out of how we commonly view moral
mistakes
 Objective morality offers the best account for the way we act as victims of
injustice.
 Objective morality is not undermined by moral diversity in the world or in any
given culture.
 Objective morality best accounts for the kind of moral world in which we live.

5. I think that ideals are still being set nowadays, though it is not as prevalent as
before. It is more evident in the older generations, especially the parents and the
grandparents. They still think of the ideals even during parenting. An example to
justify my stand is when how parents think that their female children should be
prim and proper like Maria Clara from the book Noli Me Tangere that was written
by our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal. A lot of female children nowadays tend to be
boyish and are not prim or proper like Maria Clara which makes the parents scold
them or assert to them how they should act as female.
