Module 1 Lesson 1
IV. Learning Assessment
Answer:
As a human being, our obligations vary depending on what roles we are expected
to play. That is, if you are a parent, for example it is your obligation to provide for
your children, to guide them as they grow, to teach them the right values and good
conduct, etc. In general, a human being is obliged to survive and to live a meaningful
role that would be helpful for the community where he resides. We have
obligations for ourselves and for other people. But those obligations must advocate
for humanity and not for selfish motives.
2. Are clothes matter of pure aesthetic taste, or does it make sense for
clothes to become a subject in a discussion of ethics? Why? How about other
forms of adornment, such as tattoos and piercing?
Answer:
I think (that is, clothes, and adornments such as tattoos and piercings) should
not become a subject of discussion in ethics because it is only a form of self-
expression. Fashion is a form of personal art. Its sole objective is to showcase art,
and not to defy ethics by having other people interpret somebody else's manner of
fashion. However, there are certain obligations that we have to respect in terms of
being ethical. For example, proper dress code or grooming in the workplace or in
school. To observe decency and professionalism, we are expected to dress
accordingly by not wearing too revealing blouses or tattered pants.
Answer:
Well, not necessarily, we all have somewhat different realities in our minds.
Some highly religious people are certain that God talks to them, which is laughable.
Some people believe that they have the power to cure spiritually. the mind has to
be free of biases and absolutely steadfast in maintaining its integrity while making
a decision, all the while being supported by undeniable facts. Only then can a belief
be considered true. Before acting on a belief, especially those with lifelong
consequences, people are supposed to know themselves and look inside carefully. I
once heard somebody say “perception is the reality", a quote which I happen to
agree with 100%. So it doesn't matter how strongly you feel about something, the
truth is truth even if nobody believes it.
4. Is looking after the benefit of your own family over all other aspects
considered as another form of egoism? Discuss.
Answer:
No, I don't think prioritizing the needs of your family is egoism, it is normal to
look after your family. When you do a step on other people's head while doing that,
then it might be. Once you break the golden rule and providing your family as
excuse, then I would consider that is egoism. Not only that, you maybe
psychopathic or sociopathic as well as narcissistic cutting in line in life and getting
what you want isn't commendable, not from my point of view at least. It is
embarrassing and deserves to be criticized by everyone.
1. Look for a newspaper article that tackles an ethical issue. Consider the
following questions:
No, it is not acceptable that those responsible for the death of Chris
Anthony Mendez got away with murder because the hazing made by
the fraternity is improper. Where fraternity also refused to sign a
statement condemning the death of death of Chris.
4. Do you think it is right for someone to look after his or her own welfare
over any other concern such as justice?
Discuss.
YES, it is right for someone to look after his/her own welfare over
any other concern such as justice. A justice which give a person what
he/she deserves or in more traditional terms, giving each person his
or her due. It has a principle that “equals should be treated equally
and unequal unequally”. It sometimes expressed “individuals should be
treated the same, unless they differ in ways that are relevant to the
situation in which they are involved”.
