Negative phase sequence

DSE5500 series controllers include a “Negative phase sequence” alarm that is configured using the PC configuration
software.

• Causes
o Unbalanced single phase loads
o Transposed lines (DSE 5500 additionally includes phase rotation checking)
o Line faults
o Breaker / load switching faults

• Effect
o The generator star point ‘moves’ in relation to the phases causing the angles between
phases to change away from normal. Synchronising becomes more difficult and leads to
large currents if the breaker is closed.
o Negative sequence current components cause overheating in the generator.
o Negative sequence current protection has become standard in the generator industry
due to the availability of electronic measuring devices such as the DSE series of
controller.

• Detection
o The DSE5500 series controller detects negative phase sequence by measuring the
imbalance of the load in the connected phases. If this imbalance exceeds the
configurable threshold, the negative phase sequence alarm is activated.

• Typical settings
o The DSE factory setting for negative phase sequence (20% trip) is designed to protect a
‘typical brushless alternator’. You are referred to your alternator manufacturer for
recommend settings for specific alternator types.
