The Ivatan houses are not the typical houses you can find in the
Philippines. The Ivatan people, an ethnolinguistic group of the Batanes
province in the northernmost part of the country, built the nowfamous
stone houses for a very good reason: to protect them against the harsh
environmental conditions.
One of the oldest house in Batanes.
The house is made of limestone and coral and its roofing of cogon rice.

Mt. Carmel Chapel, also known as Tukon Church, was first
established on May 3, 2008, at Sitio Tukon, Barangay Chanarian, Batanes.
It adopted the design of a traditional Ivatan house made of stone walls,
making it the only chapel embodying such design.
The chapel looks like it popped right out of a story book modeled after
the traditional Ivatan Houses.

Old houses and settlements never failed to fascinate me. Famous for
preserving how a town during the Spanish times were planned are the heritage
towns of Taal in Batangas, Pila in Laguna, Silay City in Negros Occidental, and the
UNESCO World Heritage City of Vigan in Ilocos Sur, which is also a candidate for
being one of the Seven Wonder Cities of the World. But recently, an alternative
destination has been offered to the public – Bataan’s Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar.
Las Casas, as it is commonly called, is an open -air museum and a heritage park
located in Barangay Pag - Asa in the Municipality of Bagac, Province of Bataan. Unlike
other heritage towns, what makes this place different is that the old houses here
were just transferred from their original locations and restored back to their
former glory.

It is a century-old church that was built by Spanish friar from the Franciscan
order in 1874.
Using just the slabs of stones taken from the sea and put together using egg
whites mixed with lime and coconut wine, it is perhaps the most well-preserved
church in Sorsogon. Although it already undergone some restorations, the original
walls including the bell tower are still intact.
The pastoral town of Barcelona which is only a few kilometers away from Gubat prides
itself for its 18th century church.

Isneg architecture differs markedly from that of the other groups in the Cordillera. This difference lies mainly in the boatlike design of
the Isneg house. Apayao in the northernmost part of Luzon is the only region in the Cordillera with a navigable river, and among the mountain
people of the north, only the Isneg are natural boatpeople and boatbuilders.
A typical Isneg house resembles the traditional Isneg boat in some ways. The boat,
called barana’y or bank’l, is made up of three planks, a bottom plank which tapers at both
ends, and two planks on both sides, carved and shaped in such a way as to fit alongside the
bottom plank. The roof of the Isneg house suggests an inverted hull, and the floor joists
when seen from the outside appear to have the shape of a boat.

feet high, with the front wall open in the middle.
The walls on the front and the sides are built of wood
slabs but the rear is constructed with stones chinked
with clay.
