2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The DYNAPOWER EU‐10258 SCR Monitor Board has been designed to detect a short circuit SCR
device and Inhibit DYNAPOWER electronic control circuits using a +7.5 to 11.5VDC output signal
(depending on impedance.) The output comes from TB2‐9. The maximum current available is
150mA. The INHB terminal TB2‐8 goes high when a fault is detected.

The DYNAPOWER EU‐10258 SCR Monitor Board has been designed to indicate a fault and
signal the DYNAPOWER TOUCHPAD.
The TOUCHPAD indicator output is an isolated open collector output; with a 30VPeak inverse
voltage. It has 150mA output maximum. The typical voltage is 15V from the touchpad. INH+ is
pulled to ground when a fault is detected.
Details of the circuitry are shown in figure #2

The dry relay contact is used to open the source power of the rectifier (Main contactor). Its
contact is rated at 8A @ 250VAC. An MOV is incorporated at the board level to capture the
inductive kick related to opening an inductive load. See figure #3

4. FIELD TEST PROCEDURE
No field adjustments are necessary. To bench test board, use lab test fixture and document
named “SCR Monitor Board Test fixture.doc”
FIELD TEST PROCEDURE:
Install board in rectifier. Energize unit. All LEDS should be illuminated.
Start unit. ALL LED’s should flicker.
Remove one of the wires from TB1‐4 through TB1‐9. SCR monitor board should trip off
rectifier; indicate touchpad (if installed) and RED LED indicator for wire removed should
stay illuminated.
NOTE: Removing common anode/cathode wire will not trip unit off.
Re‐install wire.
Cycle power to the rectifier.
NOTE: SCR Monitor Board will not reset until power is cycled to the board.
Re‐start rectifier and repeat previous step until all six transformer voltages have been
checked.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
1.0 Summary
The SCR Monitor Board detects and annunciates a short circuit failure of any one of the
six SCRs used in a six‐pulse SECONDARY SCR rectifier. The circuit board also initiates
rectifier shutdown in response to a shorted SCR; thus, preventing subsequent failures of
the surviving SCRs which might otherwise result from the excessive currents created by
the initial fault. Shutdown is accomplished through an on‐board relay whose N.O.
contacts are wired in series with the holding contact for the main contactor. An SCR
fault will cause this relay to drop out which, in turn, will cause the main contactor to
drop out.
The SCR Monitor also produces a gate‐inhibit signal in response to an SCR fault. This
signal is applied to terminals 11 and 6 of the C.A.T. board (#12 and #18 on 65C, and 65D
board) removing gate‐drive voltage from all the SCRs. This gate inhibit function is
necessary to provide an immediate shut off of the surviving SCRs; therefore, protecting
those devices during the relatively long time required for the main contactor to drop out
once power to the coil is interrupted (50 ms or more).
2.0 Detailed Description
2.1 Rectifier Shutdown
Each SCR is monitored by means of a wire connected to its anode and terminated on
this circuit board. The board detects the absence of a reverse blocking voltage across
anode‐cathode of the SCR (indicating a short circuit from anode to cathode). Within 23
ms of the failure, the holding current through the interlock relay coil on this board will
be interrupted. Relay dropout time is 20 ms, so the holding circuit for the main
contactor will be interrupted 43 ms following the detection of a fault. The drop out time
of the main contactor must then be added t this 43 ms resulting in a total time lapse of
approximately 90 to 150 ms between detection of an SCR fault and the interruption of
AC power to the input of the rectifier.
2.2 Gate Inhibit Function
To protect surviving SCRs during the relatively long interval between fault Detection and
power interruption, a gate‐inhibit signal of 7.5 volts (with a 1k load) is produced at
terminals TB2‐8 (+) and TB2‐9 (com) with 23 ms of the fault detection. A gate‐inhibit
signal of 11.5V (with a 10K load) is produced at terminal TB2‐8(+) and TB2‐9(com) these
SCR Monitor Board User’s Manual – Watchdog – EUU‐7‐102583000 2013 Rev 1
terminals are wired to the inhibit terminals of the control electronics to initiate an
immediate gate inhibit ensuring that surviving SCRs are shut down within 1 ½ power
cycles following the fault.
The time window of 23 ms is used rather than 16.7 ms (one period) to avoid nuisance
shutdowns which might be caused by large electrical transients in the system.
2.3 Failure Localization
The failed SCR is identified by one of six LEDs mounted on the circuit board. Because
this board is powered independently from a 115 VAC source, the LED will remain lit even
though the main power to the rectifier is shut down following fault detection.
The LED associated with the failed SCR will remain lit until an attempt is made to restart
the unit. If the failed SCR has not been replaced, current tot the coil of the contactor
will be interrupted within 150 ms after the START pushbutton is pressed even if finger
pressure is maintained on the START pushbutton. This is an improvement over the
original version.
If the failed SCR has been replaced, the unit will self‐reset and start normally.
In normal operation, all LEDs will flash at a 60 Hz rate while the rectifier is on and will be
lit steadily while the rectifier is off.
3.0 Fail‐Safe Aspects
(a) Failure of the 115 VAC power supply to the board or of the on‐board DC
power supply will cause the on‐board relay to drop out initiating
shutdown.
(b) Disconnecting or breaking any of the wires to the A‐F terminals
connected to the SCR anodes will cause the on‐board relay to drop out
initiating shutdown.
(c) A short‐circuit across TB2‐B and TB2‐9 (gate‐inhibit) circuit will prevent a
gate‐inhibit signal from being sent to the SCR drive electronics but will
not prevent the on‐board relay from dropping out in response to a fault.
NOTE: The "gate inhibit" function on the SCR drive electronics requires a
positive voltage to inhibit the SCR gates and, thus, is not fail‐safe.
(d) In the latest design revision, the protection circuit cannot be defeated by
maintaining pressure on the START pushbutton. Current to the coil of the
main contactor will be interrupted within 150 ms after the START
pushbutton is pressed if one or more SCR has failed.
