Course Objectives
This course explores the fundamental laws, theories, mathematical concepts and applications of chemistry. Designed as one-semester
course primarily for engineering majors.

This course also provides training of laboratory skills and techniques: introduces laboratory techniques and measurement, identification of
properties of matter, volumetric analysis, and characterization of
thermodynamic properties.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the common elements by name and symbol, Describe the nuclear and electronic structure of an atom of any element in the
periodic table and predict the properties of elements and compounds that may form using the periodic table on the basis of these structures.

2. Write and balance equations for chemical reactions, and describe verbally the processes which occur in these
reactions.

3. Predict the reaction products and state of gas and gas mıxtures using ideal and real gas law.
4. Determine the electronic transitions from the wavelength of radiation absorbed by an atom or emitted from an excited atom.
5. Use the electron configuration of atoms to predict cations, anions, energetics (ionization energies, electron affinites), Lewis electron
structures and geometries of molecules.
6. Describe the arrangement of atoms in common cubic crystal lattices and describe the bonding in solids using the band theory. Identify
intermolecular forces and compare physical properties of substances.
7. Understand the first law of thermodynamics and analyze energy exchanges as work and heat.
8. Use calorimetric data to obtain internal energy and enthalpy for chemical reactions.
9. State the second law of thermodynamics and use the tabulated data to predict the free energy and spontaneity of a reaction.
10. Use the method of initial rates and graphical methods to determine the rate laws.
11. Write the equilibrium constant for experimental data and calculate equilibrium concentrations from initial concentrations using
equilibrium constant.

12. Write and balance half-reactions, calculate cell potentials, and predict the spontaneous direction of a redox reaction.

Also you can buy a copy from Deniz Bookstore, located at the Metu-NCC campus.

Help Book(s): Any College level General Chemistry book would be helpful.

Course Material(s) and Reading(s)

Material(s)
A scientific calculator is a MUST in all course related activities as well as for exams.

For laboratory practice:

each student must bring;

lab coat,
safety goggles,
lab manual,
water proof pen for writing on the glass,

Students without lab coats will not be allowed in the lab, and the lab coats should be buttoned up. Lab coats and safety googles can be
purchased from "Deniz Book Store", located on campus.

Reading(s)
It is strongly advised to read the relevant section/chapter from the course textbook before coming to class. this will help you to comprehend
the topics that will be discussed.

For laboratory practice;

You will take an entrance quiz at the beginning of each lab period. You will be responsible of the contents of the experiment which will be
done at that lab period.

Course Policies
Class Attendance
You are expected to attend at least 60% of class unless you have an official excuse. Failing to meet this criterium will result in a "NA" grade.

Make up for Exams and Assignments

Make-up exams will not normally be given, unless you have a university approved written excuse in a timely manner.

Final Exam Entrance Conditions

Passing the lab work is prerequisit for this course. You MUST collect at least least 60% from your lab. work. If you fail the lab, you
automatically fail the course. Incomplete lab. work will result in a "NA" grade.

Class and Laboratory Rules (Eating-Drinking, Use of Mobile Phones and Electronic Devices, Civility, etc.)
Mobile phones have to be kept closed during class and tutorial hours.

Laboratory attendance is compulsory. Some of you may not need to repeat the laboratory work. Make sure that you check your status with your
instructor. Lab scheduling and coverage will be provided by your lab instructor. Medical report is required to have a make-up. Otherwise, no
credits will be given for that experiment. More than 2 make-ups will not be given and the course grade will be NA. Laboratory grade is 15
points. If you don't take 60% of 10 points (6.00 points), you won't pass the laboratory. Therefore you will fail from the main course (CHM-
107). You will take an entrance quiz at the beginning of each lab period. You will be responsible of the contents of the experiment which will
be done at that lab period.

Laboratory Safety Procedures

No one is permitted in the laboratory with sandal or shoes which do not provide adequate foot coverage. Long hair should be tied back. No
one is permitted in the laboratory with shorts. No food, beverage, chewing gum and smoking is allowed in the laboratories. You have to

switch off your mobile phones during the lab period. You are not allowed to leave the laboratory without permission. Students must behave
in limits of common sense in the lab. Any student who does not obey the rules will be asked to leave the lab and no credits will be given for
that experiment.

Other

Laboratory Principles
1. It is mandatory to attend all laboratory sessions and perform all experiments. Make-up labs will be allowed only with a medical report
that is posted on CET.

2. If all experiments are not completed during the semester, the overall semester course grade will be automatically NA. Students with a
grade of NA will not be admitted to final exams for the course and the laboratory.

3. The passing grade for the laboratory is 6.00/10.If the laboratory grade is lower than 6.00/10, the overall semester course grade will be
automatically FF.

4. Weighted laboratory grade will be calculated as below;

Quiz 30%

Lab reports 30%

Lab mid-term exam 20%

Lab final exam 20%
