Activity This learning activity will take place as a review lesson on the
subject of context clues. Students will have learned about how
clues from a sentence surrounding an unknown word can help
bring readers to a prediction about their meaning. This
learning activity also reviews how the word itself can contain
clues when portions of the word look familiar, with roots and
affixes.

1.) Before interacting with the Interactive White Board the

class will be asked question about the defining feature of these
concepts that this review will cover. What are context clues?
What are root words? What are affixes?
2.) The first 3 slides will be multiple choice questions. 1 student
will be asked to come up to the board and circle the correct
answer. For some questions their will be follow up questions.
Example for question 1. What clues from the sentence helped
you define the word ‘jonquil.’ I’d also have students come to
the board to underline the context clues that helped them
answer the question.
3.) The next set of interactive questions are drag and drop. One
student will come to the Interactive White Board and drag and
drop the correct synonym over the challenging or unfamiliar
word. That same student will underline clues and explain their
choice.
4.) The last set of questions in the lesson review covers roots
and affixes specifically. For each description listed one student
will come to the Interactive White board and drag and drop
roots or affixes from the categories listed to create a new word
based on the information given.
5.) If needed class can look over the entire review again with
the teacher’s answers.

When children aren’t at the Interactive White Board

participating in the drag and drop they will be completing the
indentical worksheet that goes along with it. Ensuring
everyone is participating in the review and is engaged.
