    Magellan set sail from Spain in September 1519 to explore the Spice Islands. After encountering many hardships including mutiny and battles with native tribes, Magellan passed through the difficult straits near Patagonia now known as the Strait of Magellan in October 1520. In March 1521, the expedition reached the Philippines where Magellan was killed. Under the command of Sebastian Elcano, the expedition continued westward finally arriving in Seville, Spain in September 1522, thus completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
