Bioethics, is an ethical study usually associated with medical practices. It is

usually the moral basis of the rules and policies related in medicine. It usually includes
values that has a relation to branches of medicine. The study of this branch of ethics is
very important especially today with the fast advances on the medical fields because of
evolving technologies. Bioethics tells us about how people in the medical field should
act, and morally judge their work because they know that a life is always at stake.
Especially nowadays, the very recent pandemic has struck not just Philippines, but the
whole world. The virus, originating from China, had spread across the entire world and it
took a toll not just on the whole economy, but specifically in the medical field. The
doctors, the nurses, are the ones that are greatly exposed to the virus, and this is where
Bioethics comes in. How they judge a situation, how they act to the situation, and the
consequences of their actions should be critically thought upon. Because they know that
a misstep, can cause a life, especially because the virus can be easily passed or
spread.
In the Philippines, as we all know, there is a poor handling of the pandemic. Every day,
the number of affected people or as we all know in the news, the “positive cases” are
steadily on the rise. And because of that, there is a continuous surge of patients in our
hospitals. This clearly gave the medical practitioners in the country being tolled-upon.
Every day became their struggles, not just to cure the infected ones with the disease but
also keep themselves away from the disease.
Now, this is where the importance of Bioethics comes in. Having a good judgement with
bioethics in mind can help our “medical frontliners” in their fight against Covid-19. How
they judge a certain situation inside the hospital, how they try to find ways to
contaminate the disease, but most importantly, how they try to save people, without
compromising their health.
Our study aims to study the importance of Bioethics in a medical environment and
hopefully help the people of the Philippines, especially the medical practitioners or
“medical frontliners”. How they try to judge a situation where their lives would be at a
higher stake, and ethically try to win the situation, with the least consequences and risks
associated.
