Statement from Columbus Police Chief Thomas Quinlan Regarding Planned Protests

As I stated publicly Thursday, I hear the cries of this community. I hear your demands for answers, for
accountability, and for justice. My entire career has been based on the principles of service, community,
and justice- equal justice. Those are the principles that guide me as I lead the Columbus Division of
Police. They are the principles under which I am implementing reforms and reshaping this Division to
be even more responsive, transparent, and accountable.

We are aware there will be protests this weekend. We understand the issues driving people to gather
and speak out.

The men and women of the Division of Police will be here to protect your First Amendment rights. You
have my personal commitment that we are here to facilitate a safe, peaceful opportunity for all voices
to be heard.

Here is what we are doing to protect your rights and your safety:

-Columbus Police Officers will be wearing their issued body cameras to document all interactions. This
ensures full transparency for all involved.

-Uniformed officers will have badge numbers visible to ensure they are clearly identifiable by the
community.

-If anyone experiences anything they deem to be excessive or improper by a Columbus Police Officer, we
ask you to utilize the ReportCPD@Columbus.gov email hotline. Please include any photos, videos, and
specific information about the incident of concern.

We are here to listen, to help, to serve, and to protect. I ask you to honor the wishes of Tamala Payne,
Casey Goodson’s mother: “My son was a peaceful man and I want his legacy to continue in peace.”

Sincerely,

Chief Tom Quinlan

Columbus Division of Police
