Learning Segment Topic: Celebrating YOU. Piecing together skills of poetry, short stories,
and artwork with the outcome of a zine that is all about you.

Length of each lesson: 50 minutes

Central Focus: Students will focus on looking at a past self-reflect and practice writing a
poem based on information that they have already wrote. Students will be able to work
within a time limit as well as work in groups to practice their feedback and speaking skills.

Essential Question(s): How does looking at another piece of your writing help you create
something new? Why do we need to practice writing different poems with a common goal?

Learning Standard: 9-10W4:


Create a poem, story, play, artwork, or other response to a text, author, theme or personal experience;
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a variety of techniques and genres. Explain divergences
from the original when appropriate.

Pre-Assessment: Students will have a pre-written self-reflection that will advise their writing
and give them ideas when working on the “I am” poem. Students will also be given “how to”
outlines so they know what to do when writing. Students will also have prior knowledge of
how to work in groups and give feedback.

Differentiation:
For ELL students: These students will be given worksheets with vocabulary in their native
language with the following translations.

For blind or visually impaired students: Students will be paired with a buddy to read aloud
to them and answer the questions with them.

Students with dyslexia: will also be given a buddy to help read aloud to them and answer the
questions with them.

For students with ADD/ADHD/students who learn kinesthetically: Students will be placed to
work at a standing desk area if needed so they will have a better opportunity to focus
standing without having feet movement.

Vocabulary:
Self-Reflection: looking into a mirror and describing what you see. It is a way of assessing
yourself, your ways of working, and how you study.
“I am” poetry : I Am Poems are all about a person. It is a way for people to introduce
themselves to others, with topics that might not come up in everyday conversation. The
author is able to share emotions and feelings, and imagination and senses. **We will also
come up with our own class definition.
Procedure:
Anticipatory Set: 10 minutes
1. Going over what self-reflection is
a. Giving students the definition of Self-Reflection: looking into a mirror and
describing what you see. It is a way of assessing yourself, your ways of working,
and how you study.
b. Why do we need to self-reflect while writing “I am” poetry?

Initial Phase: 10 minutes


1. Students will look at their self-reflection free-write from yesterday and they will have
10 minutes to write an “I am” poem using the template of I am poem V.1 .
Middle Phase: 25 minutes
1. Students will then work on a different version of an “I am” poem (V.2)
a. Students will be put into groups of four and share out their poems in order to
practice their speaking skills
i. Students will ask questions in group discussion such as:
1. How did you decide what words you wanted to use in your poem?
2. Which part of your poem was most important to you?
3. How long did it take you to write this poem?
4. Would you have rather used a different “I am” poem template?
Concluding Phase: 5 minutes
1. Exit ticket

Follow up (homework): Students will write an “I am” poem in version 3 due friday
