Salbutamol

become inflamed (red and swollen), making it difficult to breathe. This may be due to an allergy to
house dust mites, smoke, air-borne pollution and other irritants.

Salbutamol Inhalation
Solution may be used for the management of other conditions that are not mentioned above. Your
doctor will be able to tell you about the specific condition for which you have been prescribed
Salbutamol Inhalation Solution.
How Salbutamol Inhalation Solution is used ?
Salbutamol Inhalation Solution is inhaled through a nebulizer according to the manufacturer's
instructions. The usual dose is 5mg for an adult and 2.5mg for a child over four years, given every four
to six hours. Your doctor will decide what dose and how often you will receive Salbutamol Inhalation
Solution. The dosage you will be given will depend on your condition, what it is being used for and
other factors, such as your age, and whether or not other medicines are being given at the same time.
IMPORTANT:
Fresh solution must be used for each dose. After the full dose has been given, any solution remaining in
the nebulizer must be thrown away. Nebulizers must be cleaned after use according to manufacturer's
instructions.???
Theophylline
-is a safe and effective medication for the management of chronic asthma. It reduces nocturnal
bronchospasm and airways hyperresponsiveness, and its addition to effective doses of beta-agonists
and corticosteroids leads to further improvement in symptom control.??These properties are the result of
actions other than simple bronchodilation, and there is a strong possibility that anti-inflammatory
activity accounts for its clinical advantages. Serious side effects are uncommon and their rate can be
further reduced through appropriate precautions. Recent studies have alleviated the concern over
cognitive and behavioral side effects in children.
CURRENT USE OF THEOPHYLLINE IN COPD
In the major guidelines for the treatment of COPD, theophylline is relegated to a third line
bronchodilator after inhaled anticholinergics and ȕ 2 agonists. Nevertheless, it is recognised that
theophylline is a useful treatment in patients with severe COPD as its withdrawal leads to significant
clinical worsening of the disease. 3 Many older clinicians have been convinced by its clinical value in
severe disease.

THEOPHYLLINE AS A BRONCHODILATOR
Traditionally, theophylline was used as a bronchodilator in the treatment of airway disease but, to
achieve significant bronchodilatation comparable with that of a ȕ 2 agonist, relatively high plasma
concentrations are needed (10±20 mg/l). Theophylline relaxes human airway smooth muscle in vitro
through inhibition of phosphodiesterases (PDE), enzymes that break down cyclic nucleotides.
Ipratropium
-can be used to prevent or to treat the narrowing of the airways associated with asthma.
Ipratropium
can also be used to relieve any reversible airways blockage associated with problems such as repeated
infections affecting the airways. It cant works by opening up the narrowed airways to assist breathing.
