The Architect (Juror #8 – character of Henry Fonda) is a classic example of an individual building

suitable alliances and using his network as an exchange in order to convince the 12-member jury
with his point of view. In one such incident, after the initial vote of 11-1 in favor of “guilty”, the
architect requests for another vote among the jury, with him abstaining from exercising the same.
By letting others have ownership and influence, he is able to gain the trust of the old man (Juror #9)
into voting in favor of “not guilty”. Thus, he was able to exchange “ownership/involvement”
(currency) in order to influence the decision of the old man.
