WHY MADRAS? country also has a very rich historical importance to it.
• The city’s heritage reflects the amalgam of styles and culture it was
exposed to during different times of it’s history.
• Even though structures and caves from the Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas
and Pallavas like Mahabalipuram, etc are a major tourist attraction for
the city, not much is known about the heritage structures from the
colonial era.
• The city of Madras, 380 years old was a major port city for British
India. After setting up of Fort. St George many other buildings and
facilities started to evolve around it.
•In spite of its rich heritage and history these structures are not very
well known or celebrated by both the tourists and a fair part of the
city’s population.
•All of these important building are scattered throughout the city along
with it’s rich history and cultural heritage attached to it.
Chennai, with historically rich
records dating from the British
Era, houses 2,467 heritage
buildings within its Metropolitan
area (CMA) , the highest with in
any Metropolitan area limit
in India.

• The Union Cabinet accorded in-principle approval for building a new major port at Enayam (west
of Colachel) in Kanyakumari in three phases with an investment of ₹27,570 crore to handle 127
million tones (MT) of cargo a year.

• This is a major project under the Ministry's Sagarmala programme.

The Sagarmala Programme is an initiative by the government of India that aims to modernize
India's Ports so that port-led development can be augmented and coastlines can be
developed to contribute to India's growth.
The Shipping Ministry has identified an alternative location to build a new
major port in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district. This follows the opposition
from local groups to build a port at Enayam in the constituency of Pon
Radhakrishnan, Union Minister of State for Shipping.

“The decision to drop Enayam and the approval for the new location will be
with the government. Once, the feasibility of the alternate site is established,
we will approach the Shipping Ministry for change of location. It will be done
only after an official approval from the government,” Jayakumar stated.
