24th May is one of the best Bulgarian national holidays – the Day

Cyril and Methodius who created it.
The first official celebration was in 1851 in Plovdiv.
On this day people put wreaths of flowers on their portraits and
monuments. This date is very special for all Bulgarian people –

in the year 810 and Cyril - in the year 827. They had a big
family but, unfortunately, their father Leo died very young and

 9 Music festivals in Bulgaria

ACROSS BULGARIA

The National Folk Festival of Rozhen takes place
every summer in July and lasts for three days.
People from all over the country gather below the
peak of Rozhen in the Rhodope mountains. Singers,
dancers and instrumentalists sing, dance and play
on several scenes.
It started more than a hundred years ago, in 1898,
when people gathered there for family meetings
and sang folk songs to the accompaniment of
bagpipes. Later, it became a national singing
competition for Bulgarian folk music.
Valya Balkanska first sang the famous song Izlel e
Delyo Haydutin there. Later, the song went into space
on board the space station Voyager.
Today the symbol of the festival is the bagpipers’
orchestra called Sto Kaba Gaydi.
In 1999 creative teams and performers
from Bulgaria and other countries
entered the First International
Children’s Festival Sun – Joy – Beauty.
It takes place every summer in the
beautiful ancient town of Nessebar by
the Black Sea.
The participants, aged 7 to 21, can
show their talents in classical, folk
and modern art. Groups and solo
performers take part in many sections.
The festival includes all kinds of music,
dancing, fine arts and other non-
standard forms of creativity like circus
acrobatics, magicians, juggling and
pantomime.
