CAP 540 is used through all stages of normal operation from parameter setting, com-
missioning and power system disturbance evaluation. It can also be used to clear front
indications, switch setting groups and turn autoreclosure on/off. The engineering work
can be done off-line on the PC. The configuration is prepared and tested before the
commissioning. The system for disturbance upload is prepared and tested during com-
missioning.
Fill in User Id, Password and click OK.This dialogue contains the possibility to change
the password. Note that the password may have been linked by the Administrator to a
certain authority level.
If you logon in the capacity of System Administrator you can select System and arrive
at the following dialogue
If you then click Users the following dialogue appears where you can define authority
levels .
Prj1 is a default name. Use right mouse button and select Rename. Fill in the name of
the whole structure e.g. a Power Network name like SouthNet or similar. Then click
the folder SouthNet with right mouse button, choose Add and continue to add Stations
and Bays according to your network.
When you have filled in all names your tree may look like below:
When you position the cursor on folders below top level you can as you have seen
remove and rename. Please observe: If you remove a folder or object all files like
configuration and disturbance data will also be deleted.
The last level is the Terminal level. Choose one bay, right click and Add. Then a sup-
porting dialogue appears where you can choose the proper terminal e.g. REL521*2.3
Choose a vacant slave number (they must be unique for each terminal that belongs to
the same polling circuit)
Then the structure may look as this: (Example of a complete structure down to the
final leaf)
The default configuration in the terminals is easily adapted to the customer’s needs.
The configuration consists of function blocks, logic gates and timers. The function
blocks included in a terminal are available in a library of functions, where the engineer
can pick a function and connect it according to the requirements.
CAP 531 offers a compilation check to help the engineer to make a correct configura-
tion.
The monitoring function provides an on-line check of all internal signals in a 500-ter-
minal. It offers a window into the terminal, where the commissioner can see all
changes in signal status. With this tool, the commissioner obtains a powerful help.
CAP 531 is used by the protection engineer that, for example, adapts the scheme com-
munication logic in a line protection to the customer’s requirements.
It is also used by the control system constructor that for example adapts the interlock-
ing logic to the switchgear configuration of the station.
2.1 How to start CAP 531 from terminal level in CAP 540
Position the cursor on Terminal level and click right button.
Select Terminal configuration. The following picture appears after logging in.
See the CAP 531 manual for further guidance how to configurate terminals. For
instance, Import of an earlier done CAP 531 Configuration can be done by the follow-

following dialogue appears.

bances and with blue for uploaded disturbances. By clicking the right mouse button
when in a red row (new disturbance) you will arrive at the following dialogue.
From this dialogue you can e.g. upload the selected disturbance from the terminal.
By clicking right mouse button on an uploaded disturbance (black) you get the follow-
ing dialogue.
By clicking left button on an uploaded disturbance you will get additional information
in the lower three displays, analog channels, digital channels and events.
Disturbance evaluation with the program REVAL can be started by double clicking the
disturbance, clicking the icon for REVAL in the toolbar and browse the available files
or from the dialogue when right clicking an uploaded disturbance. The chart will
appear as below. You can there study the analogue curves and the digital signals.
6 Other Programs
SMS-base is used for earlier versions of relay terminals that are not supported by PST.
CAP 540 will automatically recognize replacement PST modules for earlier Terminal
versions when copied into the PST structure.
Time Scheduler is used when specifying a time for starting disturbance uploading.
Terminal emulator can be useful for fault tracing when setting up the communication
system. Select a terminal and then Terminal Emulator in the Pull-down menu.
FTP is a File Transfer Protocol used when sending the disturbance files via a network
to a FTP server.
7 Compress/Decompress
In the File menu you can find the option compress and decompress. This can be used
when moving a project to another computer.
