This past week I have dedicated myself to doing research. I wanted to start by researching
all of the topics I need to understand that branch from Bharatanatyam. There were many
topics that I included in my proposal. I thought of many new topics I wanted to research. So,
I researched some topics that I could study. I created a guiding list of the ideas and concepts
I want to research. I will be adding to that list through the process. Additionally, I had my first
meeting with my dance teacher (mentor) after my class, and he shared different topics that I
should research. (The list of ideas/concepts to research will be in the evidence portion). I got
a portion of my research done. Through the process, I learned that I enjoyed researching. I
spent a lot of time researching for this exact reason.
Alongside practising some of my assigned choreography from class, I also began practising
my Bharatanatyam technique (adavus) every day. A professional dancer must maintain their
technique and condition every day. I practised a variety of technique everyday for 1.5 hours.
The week before, I practised for 1 hour from Monday to Friday.
P.S. I have spent one hour on this journal. That will be added to my “hours”.
I am going to continue my research next week. I have only done a portion of the research. A
great portion of my Capstone project is research-based, so I will be dedicating significant
time to doing that. From the “Evidence” section you will see that I gathered a lot of
information, however, I still have to research more concepts that are in my guiding list. Next
week I will be researching the different Bharatanatyam artists, costumes, makeup, music etc.
I will be continuing to practise dance.
Some of the obstacles I have encountered during my research process is coming across
different information and trying to figure out which information is correct. The way I overcame
obstacles like this one is browsing many different websites and videos to see the similarities
in the information and using that information.
Another obstacle I have encountered is motivating myself into practising my
technique/adavus. I have not practised the technique on my own in a very long time. It is a
form of exercise and is very tiring. I have set a certain time of the day (6 pm) to practise the
technique so that I can mentally prepare myself before practising. This method has been
working for me in terms of allowing me to stay motivated.
Some of the skills that I have used were critical thinking skills when I came across different
information on the same topics and I had to analyze information from different sources. I
used planning and scheduling skills that assisted me in time-managing. I practised my
communication skills during my meeting with my mentor (dance teacher) on Tuesday after
class.
My goal for next week is to complete my research. This is an ambitious goal for me knowing
that there is a lot of research that I need to complete and I have a lot scheduled for next
week. I will also continue practising my adavus for 1.5 hours every day.
Evidence:
Hours used since last journal entry 17.5 hours (including last week's dance
practise [5 hours])
