Challenges faced by MJF

 One of the specialties of MJF is to building capacity for human rights for the poor and
marginalized people. In their strategic plan 2019-2028 report, they have identified several
groups of people whom they consider are being deprived of various common rights,
resources and opportunities. According to the organization these groups include ethnic
minority, indigenous people, Dalit and others disadvantaged (Bede and others), PWDs,
sex workers, old aged, fisher folk, widow/ destitute women, transgender, youth/
adolescents, child labor, women survivors, vulnerable / exploited worker. One of their
recent activities that concerns the sex workers and transgender community to launch a
crowdfunding campaign to provide cash or groceries to these groups as they are mostly
excluded from the government or private relief. During this campaign, the main challenge
faced by the organization is to create a positive perspective towards these groups.
Because in countries like Bangladesh, these groups of people face so much social and
religious barriers which have already made their living hard and considered as taboo. To
put some extra pressure into it, this pandemic has also been added to the situation. As
people are not very much positive toward these groups of people, fundraising campaign
could gain very little to help them in this situation. What could definitely help the
organization is causing a change in attitude of people toward these marginalized groups
first so that they become more willing to help these deprived groups. To do this, the
organization could share their stories through social campaign or promote some of these
people for their positive contribution in the society. Because without getting out of the
taboo, the organization can hardly be succeeded into a fundraising activity for these
people.
 Another challenge addressed by the report is decreasing the donation support by the
foreign countries. As MJF works on marginalization issues, one of its core activities is to
go into partnership with different other NGOs whom they refer as PNGOs (partner non-
government organization) to promote human rights and good governance values and
principles for ensuring dignity and rights of the marginalized community. It is very much
crucial that these PNGOs do not get shuttered due to financial causes. However as
Bangladesh is becoming middle class country from lower middle class by 2024, most of
the foreign donations are shifting their support from these local NGOs. These can heavily
impact the whole NPO activities and give MJF a disadvantage to achieve their goal in
time. In this regard, MJF can open a monitor and support activity for the partner NGOs to
ensure regular basis donation support from local and foreign countries. Also they can
uphold the contributions of these NGOs to the foreign donors through yearly report and
other promotional activities so that donors can understand the importance of their
contributions and maintain regular donations to these local NGOs. With that MJF also
needs to monitor its own donation activities to run its own organization. For this the
organization can follow fundraising guru Mal Warwick’s nine principles described in his
bestselling book “Fundraising When Money is Tight”. The book suggests nine practical
steps to tackle the issue. Reassess management mechanism, strengthening the case of
giving, being content with the one in hand rather than two that may be in the bush,
cutting cost slowly, making regular contacts with big chunks, regular contacts with
donors, getting personal with donors, boosting online activities, looking for the next
better way to run org are the suggesting given by the author that can also help MJF in
this regard.
 Again another challenge faced by the organization is the stuff turnover. This problem has
been addressed as an internal risk factor in the organization’s annual report. To solve
this problem, MJF can initiate an internal monitoring process. The process will find out
the exact problem that is causing the issue. However ensuring better environment and
facilities are always the first priority that can help an o rganization to deal half the
employee turnover problem.
 Involvement of PNGOs in politics or unethical practice is another challenge faced by the
organization. Political involvement of partner NGOs can raise question among the
general mass about the transparency of activities and can cause negative impact. To
ensure transparent advocacy, MJF must be careful about this issue while partnering with
the local NGOs. It can also question MJFs mission and vision of protecting human rights
without any selfless motive. So while partnering with PNGOs, MJF can list this as a
condition to work together without any political involvement and strictly monitor the
activities to avoid any unpleasant occurrence.
