1. ABI/INFORM database
When I accessed ABI/INFORM database I faced with opening or home screen where I
can type key words, like sustainable tourism. If I want full text or peer reviewed I can
select these options. Other options are including publications, browse, as well as
advanced search. I wanted to check more option that database is offering, so advanced
search gave me more control and precision in my searching. When I press enter I can
see all results on the screen, like total number of results, there is also more suggested
searches that are related to my research which is offering easy way to more quickly
focus my search results that can be narrowed by source, documents or date. After
narrowing my research to my needs I have refined results. When I am seeing results I
can click to preview results, inside this window I can also see and check subjects
related to that article. I can see abstract or full text of an article, as well as I can select
article that I am interested in and that is allowing me to e-mail, print, cite or more, this
article or number of articles that I have selected. Also, I can also see who have cited
chosen article.
After first impression I can conclude that ABI/INFORM database is looking so
professional and its design is giving trust and feeling that every result is tested and
relevant. My feeling is pleasant and I am not worried if information that is going to be
used in my report is relevant or not, which is the most important feature for my research.

a) ABI/INFORM database, publication research results

At the beginning of my search I have decided to write my assignment about tourism and
every type of tourism that is being environmentally friendly, green or eco. I have
restarted my search and did it according to requirements of assignment. Again I have
faced with home page and I have typed keywords that should give me results according
to field of my interest. Since I just typed all of keywords at the same time with no logical
line I had no results. Then I narrowed my search to publications in document field I have
selected magazines and trade journals and started to search separately environmental
friendly tourism, green tourism, sustainable tourism, sustainable accommodation, eco
tourism and so on. And results were much better and more numerous. Five of
publications are mentioned bellow:

b) ABI/INFORM database research, articles

After making selection of publications that I will use in my report I started to study more
content of chosen publications, than I made selection of four articles that are suiting my
specialization field. I had opportunity to browse more specific issues, which are
organized by years of its issue, from the newest to oldest ones. I preferred not to use
articles older than 5 years. When I access chosen publication I am able to make new
research of publication, this search can be basic like before or advanced. Almost the
same like before, I did search by typing key words, but this time I was searching for
articles. Advanced search have given good quality results, which I have used for my
article summaries and opinion writing. All of chosen articles and my summaries together
with my opinions are following bellow.

First article – TOP SUSTAINABLE DESTINATIONS

Original article and publication: 2017. Germany, France Top Sustainable
Destinations. International Meetings Review (Online).
https://search.proquest.com/abicomplete/docview/1984330228/fulltext/91AA7DD8AFFF
42F0PQ/1?accountid=27295 , Accessed on 26th of April 2018.

The Sustainable Tourism Index is ranking of top 10 sustainable destinations, that shows
awareness and global travel environment, issued by eleven global experts from this
filed. The leading countries in this ranking spots are European countries – France,
Germany and UK.

4
Not just in Europe developing countries are showing awareness of sustainable tourism.
Japan and China have also made huge impact on sustainability.

Sustainable practices are organized in different regions it can be organized between

nations, on local or regional level.

This index is showing practice of five categories: political and regulatory environment,
environmental sustainability, socio-economic sustainability, economic sustainability, and
travel and tourism industry.

Different cultures deals with sustainable tourism in different ways. In France, Germany
and UK they are making action plans and laws. Since, China is becoming fast growing
market in world tourism much more effort should be directed to this area of the world in
order to make sustainability on global level.

After analyzing this article I can conclude that sustainable tourism has a great influence
in tourism industry, as well on our environment. Since Globe is becoming too crowded
place for leaving, leaving sustainable lives is only thing that we can do to save our
planet for next generations. The Sustainable Tourism Index is amazing way of
motivation societies to start thinking, planning actions, in order to make this world to a
better living environment. Rich European countries are leading in this ranking, just like I
expected. Like author have mentioned, there is a strong need to put much more effort in
specific areas of Asian continent, since this part of the world are growing much faster
and are having huge impact in the world.

France, Germany and UK are great examples of successful action plans and awareness
of how important sustainability way of leaving is.

Second article – ECO-FRIENDLY PRACTICES IN THE LODGING

INDUSTRY
Original article and publication: GÖKDENIZ, A., ERDEM, B. and ÇEKEN, H., 2014.
ECO - FRIENDLY PRACTICES IN THE LODGING INDUSTRY: THE CASE OF
AYVALIK CUNDA ORTUNÇ HOTEL, TURKEY. International Journal for Responsible
Tourism, 3(1), pp. 7-21.
https://search.proquest.com/abicomplete/docview/1545973194/fulltext/4822F88F74CC4
6A7PQ/1?accountid=27295 , Accessed on 26th of April 2018.
The article tells about the challenging factor about the eco-friendly tourism. Such as
energy saving, development and saving of natural resources and management about
environmental tourism. The new trends are developing from last two decades and

5
tourism sector has encountered demanding issues and changes. The main changes are
eco hotels.

Eco hotels are type of accommodation that is making improvements in minimizing its
influence on environment. This is responsible practice, in the terms of green living.
These changes are more sustainable because of environmental changes. People are
now more aware about the natural resources and concerned about land and its
resources.

These eco hotel meeting their expectations and creating a good image in the eyes of
customers. As in result human being are showing result more about nature. Green
tourism and Green accommodations by hotels are becoming more popular. Organic
establishments and sustainable tourism where different organizations appear as
diversified factor are becoming more demanded and showing good image of tourism. In
today`s world, Eco hotels are becoming more demanding and creating new perception
in the eyes of beholders.

For sure, there is so many challenges when it comes to becoming eco-friendly.

Technology innovations speeded up process of making everything more
environmentally friendly. I can only agree that eco hotels are the biggest change when it
comes to tourism innovations and contribution in turning all touristic movements more
environmentally friendly. Environment and its changes is having big influence on
peoples mind and they are becoming more aware of importance of all environmental
changes. Customers are supporting eco hotels and enjoying in this absolutely different
travel experience.

Green hotels are just one type of supporting rational usage of water, electric energy, as
well as recycling. Eco friendly accommodation is not just having impact on people`s way
of behaving, but also it is making expenses much lower and is offering opportunity for
better marketing activities. But, still the most important part is friendly impact on the
environment.

Third article – ECO TOURISM IN ASIAN COUNTRIES

Original article and publication: GOODWIN, R.D. and CHAUDHARY, S.K., 2017. Eco-
Tourism Dimensions and Directions in India: an Empirical Study of Andhra
Pradesh. Journal of Commerce and Management Thought, 8(3), pp. 436-451.

This article shows the aspect on Eco tourism in Asian countries, responsible tourism
with rich culture and nature. Eco-Tourism not only builds entrepreneurial skills at a local
level but also links community members to the larger world in ways that create
knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of other peoples.

Nature-based tourism refers to tourism whose main purpose is the viewing or enjoyment
of the natural environment, which include hiking, bird watching, or safaris. This is the
challenging and new trend tourism globally. It includes the ecological, economical and
community aspects. Some Asian countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, India etc.
are fastest growing in tourism industry and paying more focus of attaining eco-tourism.

Tropical beaches, ornate temples of Bhudda are famous in Malaysia. Malaysia is

blessed with variety of natural resources and eco systems. India, the land of varied
geography offers several tourist destinations that not just de-stress but also rejuvenate
you. There are several ways to enjoy Mother Nature in most pristine way. The few
places like the Himalayan Region, Kerala, the northeast India, Andaman & Nicobar
Islands and the Lakshdweep islands are some of the places where you can enjoy the
treasured wealth of the Mother Nature. Thenmala in Kerala is the first planned
ecotourism destination in India created to cater to the Eco-tourists and nature lovers.

As far as I am concerned, eco-tourism is having great impact in waking up local

people`s interest and creativity for entrepreneurial. Countries are helping and supporting
educational and informational systems for local citizens.

This is so valuable in Asian countries and people are finding way to use all resources
that are around them in order to make tourism industry better. There is so many
challenges that every region have to face with before making eco-tourism successful.
During eco-tourism implementation a lot of things have to be solved and considered.

Asian region is full of potentials with a lot of unexplored places, with its wild beauty and
citizens have figured it out and are putting so much effort in order to value these
features in its best and sustainable way.

Process often can be long, but it should to be well planned and supported from every
society segment.

Fourth article – SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IS A KEY TREND

Original article and publication: 2012. Virtuoso: Sustainable Tourism Is a Key Trend.
Jacksonville, United States. Travel & Leisure Close – Up.

Virtuoso is luxury travel network. Recently they had travel week during which they have
indentified that sustainable tourism is a key trend. All top destinations and travel
providers are supporting this movement.

As Matthew D. Upchurch, CTC, Chairman and CEO of Virtuoso said that what Fashion
Week means for fashion industry and their consumers, Virtuoso Travel Week means for
travel industry. After Travel Week some of their travel providers shared exciting
announcements, combined with interesting statistics and insight. Here are some of
them:

Bhutan: The Kingdom of Bhutan is not just `must` on savvy travelers bucket lists but it is
also on Virtuoso list of preferred destinations.

Aqua Expeditions: The MV Aqua Mekong is third luxury vessel lunched in 2014, that
sailing in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Mexico: This destination is staying on the list of favorite luxury destinations, especially
for families, couples and singles.

Ecuador: Next `go to` destination of South America will be Ecuador with announcing its
new concept Conscious Tourism.

AmaWaterways: River cruising countries are biggest travel trends for the last two years.
This River Cruise is glimpsing around one of the world`s oldest waterways and
communities.

Abercrombie & Kent; Luxury Travel Thrives and Join a Travel Community are also on
the Virtuoso list of top and key tourism trends.

As one of the biggest travel weeks in the world with so many members, countries and
big network I can only agree with results of these researches.

Sustainable tourism is and must be key trend in travel industry. Every organization is
implementing sustainable tourism in its own way.

Bhutan for sure is going to be successful as emerging travel destination.

Aqua Expedition is already well known for its cruises, and their new cruise can only be
like before.

Mexico is going to keep its luxury attitude and will be place for families and couples.

Ecuador surprised me to be on this list, and their Conscious Tourism is going to have
great impact on sustainable tourism.

2. ABI/INFORM database – articles
Now I am starting my search again, and I am back on the opening page. As I have seen
before ABI/INFORM is providing access to publications on business topics. Those
publications range from newspaper, scholarly journals, trade magazines, or popular
magazines articles. I am interested in finding articles on eco-tourism and every tourism
niche that is environmental friendly and is supporting tourism development in its
sustainable way.

a) Basic search
I defined topic that I am interested in and I will navigate my search according to my filed
of interest. I will write key words in search box between inverted commas: ``eco-
tourism`` and ``sustainable tourism`` and ``green tourism`` and ``environmental
friendly`` in order to get better quality results and to ask system to search for these
together as phrases. I have used and in order to find articles that are discussing about
those concepts. Before starting my search I marked Full text option, so my results will
be even more classified.

I have 2527 results, which is quite big number of results. On the left side I can narrow
my search more, I can sort articles according to relevance and date. So I used this
option, because I want to see firstly most recent articles. Just as before, when I was
searching for publications I can narrow my results to source type (trade journals,
magazines, newspapers, scholarly journals…), publication title, document type, subject,
classification, company/organization, location, person, tags, language, document
feature, publication frequency or date. By choosing given options number of results from
the beginning of my search started to be lower.

After checking first 50 articles I found few of these that I already analyzed in first
question. But I can say that good quality results and type of articles that are suiting my
specialization were hard to find, and I should put more energy in analyze of each
articles to find perfect ones.

b) Advanced search
I will start my search once again. This time I will chose option advanced search. The
page that I got is already different than before. I have more search boxes than with
previous search method and much more options so this search looks and feel like it is
going to give better quality results. When I start to type keywords in search boxes I am
noticing that words are appearing and system is suggesting better combinations for
research, so I am going to select offered phrases. I am going to add synonym near my

9
keywords by connecting them with OR ``green tourism`` OR ``green concept in
tourism``. System is giving me opportunity to make search more specialized by adding
more key words and adding new rows, as well as possibility to remove them. On the
right side of search box I have opportunity to choose where do I want these key words
to appear (document, article, subject heading etc.) but I am not going to use this
opportunity at the time.

Next step is to select full text option and publication dates. This time I can navigate my
search before seeing all results so options like language, document and source types
are already available. But I will select only full text option.

This time number of results is 810 and results are having better quality. Firs 10 articles
are suiting my filed of interest better than 50 articles from previous search method.

I can preview all of the articles and I can access full text immediately online.

I wanted to try to search my topic by subject, since I think that way should be more
effective. So I began advanced search again, firstly I have selected subject heading
filed and I looked up for official terms that are used to identify articles about sustainable
tourism, so I selected offered keywords and added them to search. I got only 4 results
that were not suiting my topic, but system offered related searches that gave me more
results that are suiting my filed.

I can conclude that advanced search method is giving good quality results with lot of
opportunities. Navigating my search I got in short period of time good and so useful
articles. For researching my topic I prefer to use advanced search method.

c) Scholarly articles/Scientific articles

I am beginning my search like previous one, using advanced search method and
selecting full text option than I am using same key words as before. I narrowed results
to only recent articles adjusting the Publication date range. I am going to look at only
articles from the last 10 years. In the box for narrowing results due to source type I
have selected scholarly Journals. Result of my search is 1148, after checking first 50
articles I made selection of 5 articles and journals, they are listed:

1) MELER, M. and HAM, M., 2012. GREEN MARKETING FOR GREEN

3. EMERALD database
When I first entered Emerald data base I can notice search box, just like on
ABI/INFORM data base, but whole page is much different with more features like this
one under search box `Discover new things`. On the top of the search box I can choose
between three buttons: home, journals & books and case studies. In the part `discover
new things` there are various areas of interest and one of them is Tourism & Hospitality
which is my field of interest. When I enter and scroll down I can see that content is set
by default, but I am able to limit that to only journals, books series or books. But system
is showing me listing of publications that are specifically related to Tourism &
Hospitality. Results that I got are 357 articles/chapters and 16 case studies. Emerald is
giving me opportunity to refine my search by applying filters: keywords, publication
types, subject, and types. So I decided to refine my search by selecting all keywords
that are suitable for my filed of interest, as well as date (not older than 10 years), type of
documents that I want to see. Now I have 33 results. If I click on the name of the journal
I can open up specific issue and see its content. I can also see on the right side of the
page the most read and cited (from that particular journal) or related articles.

Emerald database looks trendy and I prefer its design. Discover new things area is
making big difference and you can search your field of interest even more, in this way it

11
is more useful than in ABI/INFORM case. Because, you can find more interesting
topics, not just these that you are looking for but still in the area of your field.
ABI/INFORM is saving time form that point of view, because you are not going to end
up scrolling down information that are not part of your search.

Emerald is more suitable for need of students, and its design is following new trends
and site design. But Emerald doesn’t have numerous search results, and that’s why I
would rather choose ABI/INFORM database. I have made selection of 5 articles:

1) Bowman K. S. 2011. Sustainable tourism certification and state capacity: keep

12
In the 2014 article in the Scholar Journal Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality
Management in Opatija, Biennial International Congress Tourism & Hospitality Industry
``GREEN MARKETING FOR GREEN TOURISM``, authors Meler, Marcel; Ham, Marija
is providing understanding of green marketing and opportunities for Croatia as future
green destination.

For many third world countries tourism is having big influence on its economy. It is
supporting many areas, by improving and developing infrastructure. But sustainable
tourism is affecting tourism in recent years. By turning tourism into sustainable it is
being improved.

In Croatia main product type is ``sun and beach`` tourism but they are trying to change
this attitude into more competitive and sustainable tourism types.

Making relationship better between environment and tourists can be made by educating
and training people that are involved into tourism industry.

Croatian tourism can become competitive by implementing green tourism as well, that
can be followed ecotourism and green marketing.

In order to control mass tourism, alternative types of tourism are different and defined
as activities with smaller scale, locally owned, with low impact, with high profits retained
locally.

Eco tourism is type based on really small groups, their touristic moves are responsible,
they are aware and behaving responsible with natural and cultural environment. This
type is promoting returning to nature and the world.

Green or ecological tourism is type where people are doing leisure activities in rural
areas. They are connecting with nature in order to benefit and enjoy countryside. You
can notice that ecotourism is almost equal to rural tourism,

Green marketing is method of marketing that is involving cooperation between suppliers

and sellers, partners and rivals, so It can value whole chain in order to benefit all of
them, make a long-term, positive contributions not just to member of the chain but
environment itself.

Croatia is having opportunity to make strong global green brand in tourism, due to fact
that there is only few ecological oases in whole world, with its relatively ecologically
potentials.

I agree with authors that that sustainable tourism has a great influence in tourism
industry, as well on our environment. Tourism is having growing impact on economy
indexes, and global trend is becoming sustainable tourism. Even though so many

13
countries are implementing sustainable development, only few places on the Earth are
ecological oases, so it is really good idea to make Croatia next green destination.

Green tourism trend is demanding an creating new perception, and using green
marketing methods authors are suggesting good way of implementing the newest
trends and turning Croatia from `beach and sun` destination into something more and
trendy, since this destination is having a lot of potentials. Green tourism is for sure going
to change image of Croatia as destination in the eyes of beholders.

Like authors have mentioned there`s so many challenges that destination have to face
while becoming green, but it is worth it. Environment friendly, green hotels, and
investments and innovations into these long term goals is going to make destination
competitive and successful for long period of time, as well as to make it special and well
know globally.

All people, and especially travelers are changing their way of thinking so fast, they are
becoming more aware of importance of all environmental changes. Customers are
supporting innovations which are making globe better place for leaving.

The most important feature in the chain is education and motivation of local people and
their entrepreneurial skills. That shouldn’t be end of educational process, it should
involve other community members to the larger number of people, and final goal is
knowledge, understanding and appreciation of green tourism development.

While implementing environmental friendly types of tourism more things should be

considered like ecological, economical and community aspects.

It is important to motivate people to use all resources that are around them in order to
make tourism industry better. Croatia is unexplored destination, and this fact is making it
more interesting and attractive, since tourists nowadays are seeking for countries and
destinations with these characteristics. As relatively ecological and destination with wild
beauty nature is having all needed values that can be so attractive by putting some
effort into realizing good action plan, that author are presenting and suggesting.

Implementation process are so often long and hard to implement, but results always are
so motivational and long term, which should be final goal – to make tourism industry
sustainable and for longer period of time, by branding destination and its potentials in
completely different way than before.

To conclude everything, I can only agree with authors Croatia is having so many
potentials to implement green tourism. With its ecological features destination is ready
to change its image from `beach and sun` destination into types of tourism that are
environmental friendly, such as green tourism, sustainable development, alternative

14
tourism, ecotourism. Process of implementing and changing image of one destination
into something completely different is not fast and easy but is it something that can be
really good, seen from long term perspective. Ecological oases are not that common
around the globe, so focusing into implementing green tourism using green marketing is
something that can make Croatia so competitive and different from other competitors
from destinations region.

5. GOOGLE SCHOLAR
I didn’t have opportunity to use Emerald and ABI/INFORM databases before, since my
home university is not offering access to these databases. So I have been using Google
Scholar for my initial searches. All of the various engines tend to be imperfect in some
way, but Google Scholar is reaching into a few different databases, which can be really
useful. The best thing about Google Scholar is that it can be used in the same way as
Google is used and that allow people to easily search for information using search
engine they already have experience with. While typing it can be useful to connect
phrases using conjuncts AND & OR just like while researching other databases. Google
Scholar is having few tools that I have found useful. While researching I would often find
lots of quite old articles, so Google Scholar is also giving ability to refine our search by
date or relevance. Under every article we can see if article is cited, than I can see all
articles that used that particular article and see more recent articles connected with my
topic. Usage of Google Scholar is absolutely free and probably that fact is making it well
known and mostly used database.

On the other hand, when I find articles on Google Scholar I have to closely review each
article to determine its authority and credibility, as well as objectivity, quality and
relevance. While searching on Google Scholar you can have over hundreds thousands
results in few seconds, but it really can take much more to evaluate articles and find
useful once, sometimes it can even happen that full text is not available due to copyright
restrictions.

These are some of the reasons why I prefer using databases. Databases like Emerald
or ABI/INFORM contain only information from reliable sources and subjects are
selected by experts. So I am sure that information is reviewed few times and I am sure
that quality is good and this fact is saving so much time that I have to use to make sure
that information found on Google Scholar is relevant and useful for my research.

While doing my report I noticed that some of the articles that I have found on Emerald or
ABI/INFORM databases are not available on Google Scholar.

6. Ebook Central
15
Entering ebook central search I can see similarities wit searching databases before.
Search box is offering advencesd search metohod or browse subjects. There are
several options in the navigation bar, like help button.

a) Ebook Central – basic search

I have started my basic search by simply typing already used key words in search box.
All book results are shown, and I can see all of my key words highlited in the results.
Near book results I can see chapter results, and over there I can see book overviews. I
can make full download of the book, as well as read the book online or add it to a
folders and save it for later. I can also see all details about the book and then I can
make my decisions. There are options like: read online, full download, chapter
download, add ro Bookshelf, share link to book or cite book, description and table of
contents are also aviable over there, bibliographic info is also provided.

b) Ebook Central – narrowed search

I refined my search results using all options that are listed near my results. Like year
when book is published, subject, author, language or similar. Narrwing my search
helped to find better quality results, just like before while I was searching trought
databases.

7. THESEUS DATABASE
Entering theseus.fi home page I faced with search box that is having search instructions
under it. Going trought searching instruction everything that is needed for good quality
research is well explained in instruction window. Page is offering few languages, as well
as to connect with your personal profile, and like before you have part where you can
navigate your search due to your needs. I started my search typing my keywords and
results have showed 401 file. Now, system is offering to narrow my search more, just
like before with Emerald and ABI/INFORM database I can add advanced filters that
sorted filed due to my needs.
There are so many thesis written with same or topic related to the filed of my interest.

8. BLOGS
Blogs are places on the web where people are sharing their ideas, experiences and
much more. Blogs are easy to use and accessable for everybody who is using internet,
only in few clicks people can share thoughts, opinions, news or anything else. Blogs can
be really personalized in the way how they look like. Blogs are just like online journals,
but made in order to be shared with another people. Under every blog post there is
option to comment, so visitors of the blog are able to add their thoughts or feedback as
well. This is making community element that is making blogs a popular medium of
information sharing and exchanging. Blogs are making it easy to share videos, photos
and other types of media files with having complete freedom to express. And blogs are

16
visible everywhere, and they can be seen and used by everyone and age do not metter,
they can be used for school or work. This is great way to show your ideas, thoughts and
opinions with other people.
This sounds like amazing opportunity to share and exchange information with others in
short period of time and big audiance, but when it comes to using blogs in professional
or scientific disscusions the question is how relevenat blogs are? How easy is to find
relavant blogs? How much time it will take to make sure that blog and its informations
are relevant?
I started to search for blogs about my field of specialization using ABI/INFORM
database and result of my search was only 13 and I wasn`t satisfied with given results.
So I decided to find blogs on Google, and result were much better. But, as I explained
before it was so tricky to find suitable blogs, but I ended up with selection of 3 blogs:

1) www.thegreenpick.com, Accessed on 29th of April 2018.

2) www.sustainabletravel.org, Accessed on 29th of April 2018.

3) www.greenglobaltravel.com, Accessed on 29th of April 2018.

The most disscused topics are definitelly education and motivation of travelers to follow
principles of sustainable traveling, rather choosing green hotels, and respecting nature
in every single way.
Blogs are giving opportunity to share information so often, to update and you have
recent posts and news all the time, but informations so often are not checked few times
like it is case with databases.
I still prefere to use relevant databases for all of my researches, and blogs are easy to
access and use in another cases and in order to follow new trends and news in the field
of my interest.

9. SELF EVALUATION
I enjoyed being part of this course, since I am exchange student this was the first time
for me to face with online courses. I tried to do my best in order to fulfill my assignments
as good as possible.
I used all opportunities that I had to make this researches quality. My favorite part of this
course was using and searching through databases that University is offering, that was
opportunity that I don’t have at my home University. I tended to like the opinion writing
less than other parts of the report.
I can say that this course was so helpful, because I have learned how to use and find
information, since this is last course in my second year this experience is going to be
helpful in writing my graduation thesis.
I experienced how to self-study whole course and I was managing work under so much
pressure and stress, but I learned not to give up even in this situation and give my best
till the very end.
I had so many changes in my timetable during my stay in Imatra, so I wasn’t able to
manage my time in a good way and my report is late.

17
I would grade myself on scale 1-5 with highest grade, because I have taken this
assignment so personally and seriously.
