In Holly, everything falls apart in February, when Meg suspects that Holly had a

гrelationship with Jose during a group trip to Florida. For her return, she and the
author argue, as she claims that what he writes "means nothing" and no one needs.
the author is offended by Holly's rude commercialism, so does not speak to Holly
until late spring. His sympathy for his ex-girlfriend returns after the arrival of Doc
Golightly. Doc asks the author for help in finding Holly and tells him that he is Holly's
husband. He tells the author the story of his marriage to Tulip, which occurred when
Holly was only fourteen. She and her brother Fred ran away from a cruel foster
family. The author wants to help reunite Doc and Holly, but Doc returns to Texas the
next morning.

When the narrator reads that Rosti Trawler married Meg Wildwood, he rushes
home to tell Holly. He hears a noise from Holly's apartment, the sound of broken
glass. All this is because Holly received a telegram stating that her brother Fred had
died in the war. Over the next few months, the author watches as Holly becomes a
housewife, her affair with Jose dominating her life. She furnishes her apartment,
learns to cook and gains weight. During one of her dinners, Holly confesses to the
author that she is pregnant and that she is going to marry Jose and live with him in
Brazil. This wish becomes a reality, and on September 30 the author is sad to learn
that Holly is going to Brazil next week. She invites him for a ride with her on
horseback in Central Park. The couple is enjoying their ride when suddenly the
author's horse is deliberately frightened by a group of young boys. The horse wildly
jumps on the road in New York. Holly and the mounted policeman calm his horse
and save the author. The author is shocked. Holly returns with him to her apartment
and bathes him.
