Reflection:
Reflection Question; What was your biggest accomplishment in this course? How
did the final project and other course elements help you to reach it?
My biggest accomplishment in this course is the kitchen work triangle. Kitchen
work triangles are very important and crucial for a kitchen to function smoothly for the
clients. My final project I chose to do the Brady family of 6. They have 4 kids who help
with meals and also do homework in the combined kitchen and dining room. The first
thing we learned for work triangles is we must analyze the wants and needs of the client.
By establishing what work triangles are needed and what their purpose is, we can decide
where the different kitchen work triangles will be located.
I first analyzed how often the kitchen and dining room is being used and the
amount of foot traffic that goes through the spaces. The Brady’s use the space daily and
have a high traffic usage due to kids and guest using the spaces.
Next is asking what their lifestyle is like and what do their schedules look like
during the week. The Brady family is very busy and active with their kids being in school
activities weekly. They also have casual weekly dinner parties and the kids invite their
friends over often too. They asked for a separate kid zone with a desk and snack zone
that would not interfere with other kitchen zones. They also wanted a drawer space for
charging their electronics and well as other zones such as: meal prep, cooking, clean-up
and eating spaces.
The last step is deciding what is needed in those zones. Using the first two steps,
I decided my clients needed a separate kid zone wall. In that kid zone I designed a
specialized storage drawer cabinet to accommodate the snacks. I added a desk with a
pull out charging drawer, and a two drawer built in fridge appliance for drinks or cold
snacks. The meal prep zone has a single basin sink in the island that is close to the
fridge, cooktop and, trash compactor for easy use. Cooking zone includes the gas
cooktop and double ovens. Cleanup zone has a double basin sink on the left is the
dishwasher and on the right is the trash compactor. Using this three step work triangle
plan allowed me to create a functional and well-planned kitchen and dining room for the
active, busy Brady family.
