Characteristics of a Competent Teacher

Question: Why is the following important? The teacher is willing to change, takes risks, and is

willing to be held accountable.

 Teachers face a number of unforeseen circumstances in the classroom and need to be

able to quickly adapt; these can include: new rules and regulations, shifts in the daily

schedule, students’ sudden changes in behavior, etc.

 Teachers have to take risks and be willing to change their customary approach to: fulfill

the needs of a diverse group of learners, integrate new knowledge from professional

learning into teaching practices, be willing to learn from colleagues’ methods who have

showed success, etc.

 Teacher who are willing to be held accountable demonstrate: commitment to the

profession, legitimately care about student success, are willing to work hard to achieve

goals, are open to new ideas and methods, and are willing to offer extra help outside of

the classroom.

 A teacher who is willing to change, take risks and is willing to be held accountable is a

teacher who is willing to innovate in order to enhance lessons by making them more

interesting and enriching.
