Assignment #6 – Involvement of People
______________________________________________________________________

1. Summarize Involvement of People (at least 300 words)

In certain situations, employee morale can be increased by the use of engagement and
empowerment. Participation happens when workers have a say in their own job decisio
ns. Empowerment is the process of empowering workers within their areas of responsibi
lity and authority to set their own job goals, make choices, and solve problems. Therefor
e, it is a much wider idea that facilitates involvement in a broad range of fields, including
but not limited to the job itself. The role of participation and empowerment in motivation
can be expressed in terms of both the need-based perspectives and the expectancy
theory. Employees who participate in decision-making may be more committed to
executing decisions properly. Furthermore, successfully making a decision, executing it,
and then seeing the positive consequences can help satisfy one’s need for
achievement, provide recognition and responsibility, and enhance self-esteem. Simply
being asked in organizational decision-making may also enhance an employee’s self-
esteem. At one level, employees can participate in addressing questions and making
decisions about their own jobs. Instead of just telling them how to do their jobs example,
managers can ask employees to make their own decision about how to do them.

2. Present a case study about Involvement of People

John Lewis & Partners began trading over 150 years ago in 1864 on London's Oxford
Street, and is a leading omni-channel retailer in the UK with 50 John Lewis & Partners
shops and a growing online business. They also offer a range of financial products from
Home Insurance to Foreign Currency and our credit card, the Partnership Card
through John Lewis Finance.
'Never Knowingly Undersold' has been their unique promise to their customers for over
75 years, on quality, service and value. You can trust that they will always stock the
best quality products, responsibly sourced.
If they find a national high street competitor offering a better nationwide price for the
same individual product, sold with the same service conditions, they'll lower their price
to match in all their shops and on their website, including when a competitor is having a
sale.
As co-owners with Waitrose, they all have a share in the business and a shared
commitment to go above and beyond for each other and their customers.
They have a set of five values that were created by Partners, for Partners, to explain
what it means to be a Partner and what makes a great one. They also guide their
commitment to empower all Partners who work there, whichever part of the business
they work in, and drive our ‘For us, it’s personal’ promise to our customers.
DO RIGHT: We act with integrity and use our judgement to do the right thing.
ALL OR NOTHING: We put everything we have into everything we do.
GIVE MORE THAN YOU TAKE: We put more in, so everyone gets more out.
BE YOURSELF. ALWAYS: We’re quirky, proud and at our best when we are free to be
ourselves.
WE NOT ME: When we work together anything is possible.
John Lewis expresses a strong focus on people. One way of doing this is to call their
employees partners. A word is not just a word; it is also the connection people make
with that word, the emotions that it awakens. By calling them partners, the company is
clearly expressing that there is a shared responsibility for the customers and the
outcomes of the company. So they focus on involving their partners in decisions and
solutions, empowering them to create the best customer experience.

We see this a lot; that employees who are invited to be involved (not just served a “fait
accompli”) also feel empowered and they take personal responsibility – they know they
can make a difference and it engages them to do more.
