I. INTRODUCTION

This paper takes the form of a critical review of the article "Critical discourse analysis: Toward
theories in social media" written by Connie S. Albert,MS (Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville) and A.F Salam, P.hD (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) Published in
January 2013 was discuss about how the impact of social media in the characteristic of the
children, the social media maybe as well as the tool to create a cyber bullying among every
children. In this article the author explained how the social media is used as the cyber bullying
from many theories that the author quote related to the topic. The author takes the perspective
from sociology, psychology, management, economics, etc., aspects. In state of mine the cyber
bullying is uncontrolled problem, cyber bullying usually done by the students who are think they
are powerful enough to control someone or some group. Cyber bullying make a large impact of
how the children behavior, cyber bullying also attacking child psychology and for the worst it
may make the children stressed and frustrated.

II. SUMMARY OF THE ARTICLE

BACKGROUND: STRANDS OF CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

Fundamentally, a CDA approach is instituted to analyze opaque as well as transparent

structural relationships of dominance, discrimination, power and control as manifested in
language. This would allow the researcher to examine the language in adolescent text messages
to reveal the reciprocity effect between adolescent socialization and the language constructed
around that socialization. The idea of using existing data, whether large or small sets, fits with
social media research, as there exists a plethora of data inside social media. This would allow the
researcher to examine the language in large corpora of text messages to reveal the reciprocity
effect between adolescent socialization and the language constructed around that socialization.
The actions of those individuals influence the social structure and the interplay creates
perceptions that are shared by the social group. On the other hand, dialectical-relational and
discourse-historical approaches give focus to the structure of the social situation and language of
which it is constituted. The dispositive approach argues for the acknowledgement of societal
reality only if it is determined inside discourse, excluding non-linguistic elements of social
action. This would allow the researcher to examine the language in adolescent text messages to
reveal the reciprocity effect between adolescent socialization and the language constructed
around that socialization.

CDA AND SOCIAL MEDIA AS A DISCURSIVE SYSTEM

These dialogic exchanges enable such discourse actions as relationship building, social
situation development and power imbalances that can potentially affect or be catalysts to social
issues. Social movements, cyber bullying and online sexual predation of children are examples
of social issues influenced or initiated by the discourse within and/or structure of social media.
Social media has brought that empowerment to textual discourse among social media
participants. Within social media online predators can access numerous victims simultaneously,
hide behind a mask of anonymity and collect information about children.

With a focus on the discourse as well as the power and sociocultural practices of said
discourse, a Critical Discourse Analysis approach would be a viable choice for researching the
phenomena and moving toward theories in social media. Within social media online predators

PREDATORY COERCION IN SOCIAL MEDIA: ILLUSTRATION OF THE CDA

APPROACH IN THEORY BUILDING

We are employing Furlough’s dialectical-relational approach to the phenomena of

predatory coercion of children within social media. The corpus for the study is a subset of the
Perverted Justice transcripts which included 23,237 lines of chat comprised of an estimated
112,455 words. The constructs from theory include coercion, alternate social realities, reactance,
learned helplessness and social control. Within this example, coercion is the use of power,
activity control and intention alteration by a predator to control the discourse of the social
situation . Social control is a child’s engagement in behaviors/activities that he/she feels will
bring happiness, fairness and/or satisfaction. Utilizing these constructs, a proposed theoretical
model was developed and then evaluated using the dialectical-relational approach.
Within this example, coercion is the use of power, activity control and intention alteration
by a predator to control the discourse of the social situation . Together, this approach and the
theoretical constructs provide insight into a theory of predatory coercion in social media from
which change can be envisioned to improve the lives of ordinary people within society –
specifically the vulnerable population of children who are using social media. Typically critical
for social media hypothesis advancement due to the reality that inside social media, content is the
driving occasion. Understanding how that content is made and changed may be a vital step in
understanding the control lopsidedness between predators and children and how those talks
secure control for the predators (Albert and Salam,2012).

III. EVALUATION

As far as how the author discussed about how the social media may impact to the children
and show how the children being a prey for the predator in internet and social media the author
gave the reason why the social media bring a large impact to the children. The social media
fulfilled by the scammer who can attack the children anytime, and the children may be a victim
of some crime. In my opinion the internet or the social media is a dangerous place for the
children as they are too young to know about the real world and if they are become the victim of
the crime they don’t know how to fight back. I agree with the author as the author mention that
“Cyber bullying is another example of a social issue in which IS research is entangled. Defined
as the deliberate and repeated harm inflicted through the use of cell phones and electronic
devices, cyber bullying has emerged as a dangerous unintended consequence of social media.
Social media exacerbates the danger as it affords a measure of anonymity and the opportunity to
reach a much larger number of victims without a significant threat of punishment.”

IV. CONCLUSION
Basic Discourse Analysis offers one hypothetical structure to address the shortfall of web
based life hypotheses in IS. The present paper presents the six methodologies of CDA, laying out
its utilization in the investigation of social issues. A case of the argumentative social
methodology applied inside web based life so as to analyze the online predation of kids is given
as proof. Also, CDA is contrasted with the standards for basic pragmatist inquires about in IS.
The consequence of this examination uncovers similitude’s between the two, despite the fact that
CDA is noted as contrasting in its establishment on phonetic procedures. Along these lines, while
CDA fits the profile for basic research in IS and brings to the field a semantic investigation
system for assessment of social marvels, it is interested that scientists who spend significant time
in CDA, a field which perspectives talk as social practice, are not seizing "each chance to take a
gander at talk in a medium which is currently such a key space for establishing social practice,
and for reflecting and forming social procedures and issues" (Mautner 2005, p. 810).
