INDIVIDUAL PROJECT:
“NEEDS ANALYSIS AND SYLLABUS DESIGN USING AN ESP APPROACH”
A. Learning Objective:
After attending all required lectures, actively participating in discussion, and
completing all the assigned tasks, the learners are able to design syllabus for teaching
ESP with all aspects needed in the implementation of ESP based on the results of
needs analysis on a particular workplace
B. Name of Project (Task): Designing Syllabus for Teaching English for Specific
Purposes (ESP)
C. Instruction: You have to conduct need analysis before designing syllabus by using
competency/skill-based syllabus design on particular workplace (e.g. English for
Secretary, English for Banking, etc.). The kind of English you choose at the same
time becomes the title of your syllabus. The length of the paper is 10-15 pages (not
including appendix), consisting of three main chapters.
D. Components of Project
I. INTRODUCTION
1. The importance of English [Why is English learned all over the world
2. Brief review of an ESP approach in syllabus design [What is ESP?; Why is
it preferable in ELT?; What is needs analysis?; How to conduct needs
analysis?, What are the purposes of NA, etc.)
3. Method of doing needs analysis. [How do you collect the data in conducting
needs analysis (NA) (e.g. observation, questionnaire, interview, documentary,
etc.)
