QUESTION 1
2) Distinguish the behaviour of brittle and ductile materials by sketching their curves in one
stress-strain diagram. Between these two types of material, which one requires higher
factor of safety? Explain your answer
(6 marks)
b) Figure Q1(b) show a support beam system that consists of member AB and CB which
are pinned at point A, B and C. If P= 20 KN;
i, Determine the support reactions at A and B.
li, Determine the average shear stress developed in the pins at A and C, if the pins are
Subjected to double shear and each has a diameter of 18 mm.

mxtsb) The 30 mm diameter copper and aluminium rod segments are fixed to opposing rigid
walls as shown as in Figure Q2(b). There is a gap of 0.2 mm between the two rods at an
initial temperature, T; of 15°C, if the temperature is to be increased to 136°C;
i, Calculate the expansion of each rod due to the thermal changes.
ii. Caloulate the average normal stress in each rod.
iii, Determine the change in length of both rods.

‘Answer the following questions (no calculation is needed)
i. Is there any difference in terms of shear stress for both shafts? Why?
ji, If a 5 mm-diameter-hole is bored at center of shaft A while shaft B remains as a
solid, which one will develop higher shear stress? Justify your answer.

b) A hollow stee! shaft of 60 mm outer diameter and 40 mm inner diameter rotates at 250
rpm. If the allowable shearing stress for the shaft is 70 MPa;
i, Determine the maximum power that can be transmitted by the shaft.
ii, Sketch the shear-stress distribution along a radial line on the cross-sectional area of
the shaft.
