a) Answer the following questions:

i) State two (2) assumptions made during the derivation of bending formula.
ii) Write down the bending stress formula and describe all the parameters and its
units.

its bottom is subjected to a centric compressive y
load as shown in Figure Q2(b). Two smooth and
rounded fixed plates restrain the column from x
moving in y-y axis but allow it to move in x-x a
axis. Calculate the minimum dimension a of the 5m a
column if E = 70GPa, and scr = 57 MPa.

a) Due to the applied loading P and T, the element at point A on the solid shaft in Figure
Q3 (a) is subjected to a state of stress.

i) Sketch the state of stress acting at point A.

ii) Determine sx, sy and txy based on the state of stress obtained at part (a) i).

b) The state of stress at a point in a member is shown on the element in Figure Q3 (b).

i) Determine the stress components acting on the inclined AB as shown in Figure

Q3 (b). Solve the problem using the method of equilibrium. (Note: Mohr’s Circle
and equations are not allowed to be used.)

ii) What will be the effect on the stress components if there is no sy applied on the
