TEST 2 SEAA2223

Q1. Figure Q1 shows an overhanging beam with pin support at point B and roller support
at point E. The beam is subjected to uniformly distribution load from point A to point
E, concentrated load at point C, inclined load at point F and a clockwise moment at
point D.

(a) Calculate the reactions of the beam

(10 marks)
(b) Construct the shear force and bending moment diagram of the beam and indicate
all the important values on each diagram.
(30 marks)
(c) By considering span DE, determine the distance, d, from point A such that
bending moment, M, equals to zero.

Q2. (a) Figure Q2(a) shows a cross section of the concrete beam. The beam carries the
maximum bending moment, M = 90 kNm and the maximum shear force,
V = 48 kN.

i) Determine the location of neutral axis and moment of inertia of the

beam.
ii) Calculate the bending stress and draw the bending stress distribution.
iii) Calculate the shear stress at neutral axis only.
iv) Calculate the shear stress along the A-A line.

(b) A beam is to be designed to carry a maximum shear force of 100 kN and bending
moment of 250 kNm. The cross-section of the beam is rectangular with a
dimension depth, D is equal to 2 times the width, B as shown in figure Q2(b).
If the allowable bending stress is 150 N/mm2 and the allowable shear stress is
10 N/mm2, determine the minimum cross-sectional dimension of the beam.
