QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)


a. State any three assumptions of von Karman Theory on deflection of plates and shells.
(3 marks)

b. Highlight one application of influence lines in structural analysis. (1 Mark)


c. Highlight three conditions under which the principle of superposition is valid.
(3 marks)
d. Discuss the six static equilibrium equations for analysis of structures. (3 marks)

e. Determine the deflection at the free end of the beam shown in figure 1 using the moment
area method. (10 marks)

f. What is the difference between the influence lines, shear force diagrams and the bending
moment diagrams? (3marks)
g. Construct the influence line for the vertical reaction at B of the beam loaded as shown in
figure 2. (7marks)

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)


a. Write an equation describing the radius of curvature and bending moment at any section
of a beam. (3 marks)

b. Show the relationship between change in length and angle when the beam is undergoing
bending. (2 marks)
c. The cantilever beam in figure 3 is subjected to uniformly distributed load over entire
length and point load at the free end. Assume L=10 m w=2.5kN/m and W=8kN. Using
Moment Area method, determine

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)


a. Determine the slope at A and deflection of B of the beam shown in figure 4 using the
conjugate beam method. (10 marks)

b. The Figure 5 is a cantilever beam. Using the conjugate beam method determine the slope
and deflection of point A of the of a cantilever beam AB of length L and uniform flexural
rigidity EI. A concentrated force P is applied at the free end of beam. (10 marks)

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
a. The continuous beam ABC is loaded as shown in figure 6. Analyze it by slope deflection
method hence draw the bending moment and shear force diagram. Take EI constant.
(20 Marks).

QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)
a. Using the Strain Energy of Bending method on a cantilever beam AB on figure 7,
subjected to three different loading conditions. (a) a concentrated load P at its free end,
(b) a moment M0 at its free end and (c) both P and M0 acting simultaneously.

Determine
i. Deflection δB due to loading (a) (6 marks)
ii. Slope θB due to loading (b) (6 marks)
iii. The deflection δB and the slope θB due to loading (c) (8 marks)
