Q1 A horizontal beam BC is subjected to uniformly distributed load, w and at the same time it
is supported at end B by a column AB (diameter of 50 mm) as shown in Figure Q1. Assume
that all bars are pin-connected.
(a) Sketch a complete Free Body Diagram (FBD) for the beam with clearly shows the
all forces/moment involved. From the FBD, determine the equation of force for
member AB, PAB and also the critical force, Pcr,x and Pcr,y associated with member
AB.
18 marks
(b) Assume that the factor of safety with respect to buckling is 2.0 and the column is
made of Steel Alloys with structural A992, determine the uniformly distributed load,
w that can be applied onto beam BC without causing a column AB to buckle.
7 marks
Q2 Figure Q2 shows a shaft consists of Rods AB, BC and CD which made of Aluminium, Brass
and Steel, respectively. Given the modulus of elasticity of materials are Ealuminium = 69 GPa,
Ebrass = 100 GPa and Esteel = 250 GPa. Determine,
(a) The internal forces for each segment (AB, BC and CD) by showing appropriate
free-body diagram, FBD.
(9 marks)
(b) The total strain energy in the whole rod assembly AB, BC and CD.
(8 marks)
(c) The allowable stress in the rod assembly, and justify the chosen answer
