2nd ASSIGNMENT

Fatigue Failure Resulting from Variable Loading

A rectangular filleted bar as shown in figure below is subjected to a fluctuating force F that varies
from 2X0 N to 500 N at the end of this bar at ‘C’. Another end of this bar at ‘A’ are fixed to the wall.
This bar has a length of 1Y0 mm from ‘A’ to ‘B’ and 1Z0 mm from ‘B’ to ‘C’. This bar is made of
AISI 1050 cold-drawn steel. This bar has a thickness of 5mm, a machine surface finish and 90%
reliability. Change the X, Y and Z term with your matric card number last three digits. For example,
if your matrix card number is AD200179, X=1, Y=7 and Z=9.

F = 2X0 N ~ 500 N
All units in mm

a) Because this bar has a discontinuity geometry at ‘B’, compute fatigue stress (2 marks)
concentration factor; Kf at this location.

b) Calculate all stresses acting at ‘A’ and ‘B’ location. Then determine which (6 marks)
location from this two point will be the most critical.

c) Determine endurance limits, Se for this part at the critical location. (3 marks)

d) Calculate safety factor, (N) of this part by using modified Goodman line theories. (2 marks)
Give a conclusion for your answer?

e) Sketch the Goodman line, Yield (Larger) line and include it with the load line in (2 marks)
fatigue diagram.

KEY IN ALL YOUR ANSWERS IN THE BOX AT THE EXCEL FILE GIVEN AND SAVE IT WITH
THE NAME OF YOUR MATRIC CARD NUMBER (e.g. – AD160001.xlsx). THEN UPLOAD THE
SOFTCOPY OF THE ANSWER FILE TO THE AUTHOR IN 2nd ASSIGNMENT FOLDER
