● Answer one full question from each unit.

UNIT- I
1. a) Differentiate between plane stress and plane strain problems with CO1 (08)
examples. Write the stress strain relations for both.
b) Explain the node numbering scheme and its effect on the band width. CO1 (06)
c) Explain the various applications fields of finite element method. CO1 (06)

2. a) What are the steps involved in Raleigh-Ritz method? Determine the CO1 (10)
displacement at mid point and stress in linear one dimensional rod as
shown in Fig.2(a).Use second degree polynomial approximations for the
displacement.

b) State the principle of minimum potential energy. Derive an expression CO1 (10)
for potential energy functional for a three dimensional elastic body.

UNIT- II
3. a) Derive strain-displacement matrix [B] and element stiffness matrix [K] CO2 (08)
for 1-D linear element.
b) Derive and sketch quadratic shape functions for 1-D bar element. CO2 (06)
c) The displacement field for a 2 noded 1-D bar element is given by CO2 (06)
U = N1q1+ N2q2 where q1 and q2 are nodal displacements and N1 and N2
are shape functions. Evaluate (i) ξ, N1 and N2 at P (x = 750 mm) given
x1 = 300 mm and x2 = 1200 mm. (ii) if q1 = 0.09 mm and q2 =
0.15 mm, determine the value of displacement at point P.

4. a) Sketch and explain two-dimensional truss element in CO2 (08)


i) a local co-ordinate system and ii) a global co-ordinate system.
b) Determine the nodal displacements and stresses in the truss elements CO2 (12)
for the given truss structure. E=200GPa

7. Determine the slope and deflection for a beam at a distance L1 and L2 CO5 (20)
from fixed end. Take E=200GPa, q1=12kN/m, q2=14kN/m, L1=1m,
L2=2m, I=6x10-6m4.

9. a) Define Lagrangian. Using Hamilton’s principle, derive the equation of CO5 (10)
motion for a 2 degree freedom system consisting of two masses and
two springs.
b) What is mass matrix? Derive the element mass matrix of a 1D bar CO5 (10)
element.

Find the natural frequencies of a free stepped bar of span L subjected CO5 (20)
to axial vibration. First step is of area 2A for a length L/2 from left fixed
end and for the remaining length of L/2 area is A. Take E as the Young’s
modulus and ρ as mass density.
