 Answer one full question from each unit.

UNIT- I
1. a) What are the basic elements used to establish the functionalities of a linear CO1 (08)
and rotational mechanical systems? Give precise details.
b) For the mechanical system shown in Fig.1(b), obtain the relevant cause- CO1 (12)
effect equations. Draw the force–voltage and force –current analogous
electrical networks and verify by mesh and node equations.

2. a) Define block diagram and Illustrate how to perform the following in CO1 (07)
connection with block diagram reduction techniques:
(i)Elimination of a feedback loop
(ii)Transferring a non-unity feedback to unity feedback.
b) Draw the labeled signal flow graph for the following linear algebraic CO1 (05)
equations :E1(s)=R(s)-H3(s)C(s) ; E2(s)=E1(s)-H1(s)E4(s) ;
E3(s)=G1(s)E2(s)-H2(s)C(s) ; E4(s)=G2(s)E3(s) ; C(s)=G3(s)E4(s)
c) For the signal flow graph as shown in Fig.2(c),determine the transfer CO1 (08)
function C(s)/R(s), using Mason’s gain Formula.

UNIT – II
3. a) Analyze the importance of standard signals used for testing of control CO2 (05)
systems.
b) A plant controlled with PI controller is shown in Fig. 3(b). Determine the CO2 (05)
values of proportional gain Kp and integral gain KI, so that the output will
have peak overshoot of 0.25 and peak time of 0.5 seconds.

4. a) Explain the analysis of second order system subjected to a unit step input CO2 (08)
for different values of damping ratio, ξ.
b) Show that horizontal lines on the s-plane are the lines of constant peak CO2 (04)
time.
c) A third order negative feedback control system is characterized by a CO2 (08)

Closed loop transfer function, .If the system is

excited by a unit step input, evaluate peak time, peak overshoot and
settling time.

UNIT – III
5. a) State and provide the procedure for determining the stability of a system CO3 (10)
using Routh Hurwitz criterion. Also indicate its drawbacks.
b) The characteristic equation of an open loop system is given by CO3 (10)
s4+25s3+15s2+20s+k=0. Determine the value of k so that the system is
asymptotically stable. Also find the value of k so that the system is
marginally stable and the frequencies of sustained oscillations, if applicable.

6. a) State the rules for the construction of root loci. CO3 (10)
b) For a single loop, unity feedback system, the open loop transfer function is CO3 (10)

b) Obtain the state model for the system represented by: CO5 (09)

c) What are the advantages of Nyquist plot? CO5 (05)

10. a) List out the advantages of state space approach. CO5 (06)

b) For a certain control system . Sketch the CO5 (14)
