 Answer one full question from each unit.

UNIT- I
1. a) With neat sketches state and explain Kepler’s laws with respect to CO1,2 (08)
satellite orbiting around earth.
b) Explain the Look angles with the equations and necessary CO1,2 (06)
diagrams.
c) Describe the two methods of placing a satellite in to geostationary CO1,3 (06)
orbit: i)GTO using apogee kick motor ii)Slow orbit raising

2. a) A satellite in geostationary orbit has an apogee height of CO1,2 (06)


35,795Km and a perigee height of 35,779km.Assuming a value of
6378Km for the earth’s equatorial radius, Calculate the semi major
axis, eccentricity and period of the satellites orbit.
b) With a neat diagram, define the following: CO1,2 (06)
i) Ascending node ii)line of nodes iii)line of apsides
c) Describe orbital perturbations with respect to shape of the earth, CO1,3 (08)
rotation of apsides, regression of nodes, equatorial elipticity and
atmospheric drag.

UNIT – II
3. a) Explain satellite attitude and briefly describe momentum wheel CO3,4 (07)
stabilization.
b) Explain with typical block diagram Telemetry tracking and CO1,4 (08)
command system.
c) Explain antenna subsystem in satellites. CO1,4 (05)

4. a) Explain power supply subsystem in satellites. CO1,4 (05)


b) Explain in channeling scheme of C-band satellite transponder and CO1,4 (08)
the equipment sections making up a transponder channel.
c) Define reliability of a system and justify with an expression for CO3,4 (07)
reliability in terms of mean time between failures.

UNIT – III
5. a) Derive the satellite link formula. Express the formula in decibels. CO2,4 (08)
b) The specified down link are satellite saturation value of EIRP CO2,4 (05)
25dBW, output back-off 6dB, free space loss 196dB, allowance for
down link losses 1.5dB and earth station G/T is 41dB/K. Calculate
the carrier to noise density ratio at earth station.
c) Derive the combined noise power density to carrier power ratio for CO2,4 (07)
both uplink and downlink in satellite link.

6. a) Given the following satellite transmitted power is 20 W, satellite CO3 (06)

antenna gain is 20dB, distance= 40,000Km Ground antenna gain is
50dB, frequency is 4000MHz, bandwidth is 27MHz and System
noise temp is 75k. Calculate carrier to noise ratio (C/N) in the
ground receiver also find C/N in dB.
b) Briefly explain and obtain an expression for the overall system CO2,4 (06)
noise temperature of a communication receiver with cascaded
amplifiers.
c) A multiple carrier circuit operates in ht 6/4 GHz band width with, CO2,4 (08)
Uplink: Saturation flux density is -67.5 dBW/m 2, input back-off
11dB, satellite G/T -11.6dB/K. Downlink: Satellite saturation EIRP
26.6 dBW, output back-off 6dB, free space loss 196.7dB, earth
station G/T 40.7dB/k Calculate the carrier to noise density ratios of
both links and the combined values.

UNIT – IV
7. a) Explain the different demand assigned multiple access techniques CO1,5 (06)
in satellite communication network.
b) Explain in detail the operation of the spade of demand assignment. CO1,5 (08)
What is the function of the common Signaling channel.
c) The code waveform in a CDMA system spreads the carriers over CO4,5 (06)
the full 36MHz bandwidth of the channel, and the roll off factor for
the filtering is 0.4. The information bit rate is 64kb/s, and the
system uses BPSK. Calculate the processing gain in decibels.
Given[Eb/No]=9.6dB.Estimate the maximum number of channels
that can access the system.

8. a) Derive the [C\N]req FDMA down link analysis also illustrate the CO1,5 (08)
limitation imposed by back off.
b) Explain preassigned Single Carrier Per Channel (SCPC) satellite CO1,5 (06)
communication network with its channeling scheme.
c) A 14GHz uplink operates with transmission losses and margins CO4,5 (06)
totaling 212dB and a satellite[G/T]=10dB/K. The required
uplink[Eb/No] is 12dB i)Assume FDMA operation and an earth
station uplink antenna gain of 46dB Calculate the earth station
transmitter power needed for transmission of a T1 base band
signal with bit rate[R]=62dBb/s.ii)If the downlink transmission rate
is fixed at 74dBb/s, Calculate the uplink power increase required
for TDMA operation.

UNIT – V
9. a) Explain Direct broadcast satellite Services .Also explain the Indoor CO1,5 (10)
Unit of Direct broadcast satellite Services with a neat block
diagram.
b) Explain GPS system and why a minimum of four satellites must be CO1,5 (10)
visible at an earth location utilizing the GPS system for position
determination. What does the term “dilution of position “refer to?

10. a) Describe the main features of RADARSAT with its operation. CO1,5 (10)
Explain “dawn to dusk” orbit and why Radarsat follows such an
orbit.
b) Describe the operation of a typical VSAT system. Briefly mention CO1,5 (10)
the applications of VSAT systems.
