(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 60
Answer ONE question from each unit
All Questions Carry Equal Marks
All parts of the questions must be answered at one place only
UNIT – I
1 a Derive 3-D Stress Strain relations. K2 CO1 [8M]
b Explain the concept of Potential energy. K1 CO1 [4M]
OR
2 A vertical plate of thickness of 10 mm is tapered with widths of 80 mm and K3 CO1 [12M]
30 mm at its top and bottom ends respectively. The plate is fixed at the top
end and subjected to a point load of 200 kN at its free end in addition to its
self- weight. The length of the plate is 400 mm. Take E= 2x105 N/mm2 and
density as 7800 kg/m3. Model the plate with two elements. Determine the
nodal displacements. Also calculate element stresses and support reactions.

UNIT – II
3 a For the truss shown in Figure, Determine the displacements at nodes and the K3 CO2 [12M]
stress in elements.

4 a Derive the hermite shape functions for a beam element. K2 CO2 [8M]
b Beams are 2DOF elements. Justify your answer. K2 CO2 [4M]

UNIT – III
5 Derive the strain displacement matrix for a CST element. K2 CO3 [12M]
OR
6 a Determine the Stiffness matrix for the axi-symmetric element given below. K3 CO3 [12M]
Take E=200Gpa, υ= 0.28.

7 a Derive the shape functions for a rectangular element. K2 CO4 [6M]
b Evaluate the integral by applying 3 point Gaussian quadrature. K3 CO4 [6M]
OR
8 a A uniform fin of diameter 20m is extended from the surface where K3 CO4 [9M]
temperature is 120 o C and conduction is taken from the lateral surface and
convection from the tip of fin. Take k =17 W/m o C T∞ = 25 o C h = 20 W/m2 o
