QUESTION 1 (a) Anuclear reactor consists of a member that is subjected to an axial load of 20 KN. It is found out experimentally that the ultimate tensile strength (failure load) for material is. greater than material A. Briefly explain which material is preferred to be used as the member to-withstand the axial loading of 20 KN. (You do not need to calculate the factor of safety value). (8 marks) (b) The structure in Figure Q1(b) shows link AB which is made of steel and has uitimate normal stress of 450 MPa. Determine the cross-sectional area of link AB if the factor of safety, F.S. is 3.5 (10 marks) st Figure Q1(b) QUESTION 2 (a) A bar having a cross-sectional area A is constrained to fit horizontally between two fixed supports at a distance L from each other as illustrated in Figure Q2(a). The rod is subjected to a positive temperature change of AT. Taking the modulus of elasticity of the bar as E and its coefficient of thermal expansion as a, express the stress o in ther” adi-terms of AT, E, and a. (5. marks) el Figure Q2(a) (b) The rigid block has a weight of 500 kN and is to be supported by posts A, B and C as shown in Figure Q2(b). Posts A and B are made of steel and post C is made from copper alloy. Initially all the posts have the same original length, L. The post C is then heated so that its temperature is increased by 20°C, Each post has a cross-sectional area of 4000 mm? and thermal expansion coefficient of copper alloy is 18 x 10° °C. Given the Young's Modulus of steel is 200 GPa and copper alloy is 105 GPa respectively Pacem et = A {i) Calculate the forces in posts A, B and C (ii) Detemine the average normal stress in each post (15 marks) Figure Q2(b) QUESTION 3 (a) State TWO assumptions made for derivation of torsion formula. (4 marks) (b) A 1.5 mong tubular shaft of 35 mm outer diameter, dp is to be made of a steel for which the modulus of rigidity, G is 77.2 GPa. Knowing that the allowable shear stress is 85 MPa and the angle of twist must not exceed 4° when the shaft is subjected to a torque of 650 Nm, determine the largest inner diameter, d, to the nearest mm which can be specified in the design. fe (11 marks) Date: [West | Qoestion _| a 4 Gents > Goan Tesi Sa F'Sa wil be greater becpte of the climate tensile strength (failure load) for mater! el is greater than mateniql A+ Therefore the moet suitable materifi ein be used is material & because if the ltsmate tensile Fag 7 | A | A = aren | 126-59)M% A= LGsixio mm A= 16 S146 ym No Date: | Ques hon 2 a) eee ia o:?P a $= AaTL - Pe A G2 bL=0 (Cred ende ) } z 6L +AaTL- ow : 2 oe ot =p (oof-d) Qo": t i © > KAT-C E Ts Aat e es aawe te T b) w= Sooxrn A = 400mm * FeD : = 4xto 3m? ws Secu ee K E A = ig «ia? fc &, = 200 G Pe ] i }- Ea_= 1056 Pa bee AY z ooo Gy 20 Fs Dy t fey =~ S0OKN =O OW : Sm = Sy i ale use ae ay AE See eC? = __uxie"s (00a) Sea > Sy -Sp Seq 2 PS x10 Fe Sar AAT = -Fa A Ex ~ st teve* Ged - Fab enw?
