Sapir-Whorf hypothesis was developed by Benjamin Whorf, and it is based in Edward Sapir’s ideas, his

master, anthropologist and also linguist. This theory propose that there is a relationship between the
language that a person speaks and the way in which they perceive the world. This hypothesis is a theory
that has been debated for decades and linguist still have not decided whether it is right or wrong. This
theory also states that the structure of a language determines, or at least influences, how we perceive
and experience the world

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis has two versions, a strong and a weak version. The strong version is called
linguistic determinism and it states that language determines our thoughts, that is, the Language that
we speak, would determine completely how we understand the world, and also limit our knowledge as
well as other processes such as categorization, memory and perception.

The second version is called linguistic relativism and it proposes that language affects the way we think,
that means, there is a certain influence of the language that we speak on how we perceive the world.
For example, in the way in which we interpret the reality, and also how we solve problems or the
priorities we give to certain things.
