I have always believed that engineering is at the foundry of technological advances, making new
things that make life increasingly more productive with the least effort for a rewarding human
experience. This belief anchors my ambition to become a successful professional engineer who
can leave a legacy of practical innovation for future generations. The depletion of oil and coal
resources and augmentation of pollution question the guarantee of the Electrical Energy and
Transportation sector day by day. The adoption of Renewable Energy is a viable solution and has
been a trend for the last two decades. In most cases, energy is converted from one form to another.
The small improvements in its efficiency do a lot more in savings of energy. This idea inspired me
to go further deepen my knowledge which I have acquired in three years of experience as a
Research Fellow. I strongly believe Doctoral Research will help me to achieve my goal.
Hailing from a country like India where Electricity is not available to many remote areas which
led me to opt for Electrical Engineering during my baccalaureate. I have long been interested in
Electrical Engineering from the day when I noticed inverters at one of my relative's house which
left me mesmerized. When the power supply from the grid turns off, due to the inverter setup the
light always turns on, this made me to think about Electrical Engineering. My bachelor’s degree
at Andhra University is a diverse program because it not only equipped me to build a strong
foundation of electrical and electronics engineering concepts but also supported me to set a
direction for my future career in the field of electrical engineering. At the end of my bachelor’s, I
also developed a niche interest in the area of power electronics and electrical drives. My passion
for the subject led me to further pursue a Master’s degree specializing in Power Electronics and
Drives. Taking the advantage of a flexible structure of the course, I have had the opportunity to
choose certain electives on power electronic devices and circuits, Power Quality, Power electronic
control of AC and DC Drives, Modeling and analysis of Electric Motor drive systems, Digital
signal processing and applications. I have accrued knowledge through not only formal lectures but
also through projects, seminars, and papers I had worked on as a part of my academics. I had
attended conferences and workshops dealing with power quality and it’s impacted by incorporating
power electronic devices. As part of paper presentations, I had published a paper in an international
conference held collaboratively by Chitkara University (Chandigarh) and the University of
Glasgow (Scotland) in “Power Electronics and Energy Systems''. Attending conferences was an
important source of information, one of which proved to be extremely informative was the FICCI
conference held in September 2012 on Power Quality Improvement and its impact. During My
Master’s, the area in which I worked was on “Design of IGBT Based Multilevel converter in a
Traction Drive”. I have used MATLAB as my major software tool. I was very captivated in the
modeling of the Electrical Drives, particularly modeling of Induction motor drive in traction
applications using multilevel converters. All the above were experience by themselves. On one
hand, I was gaining technical knowledge and on the other it was preparing me for the future by
helping me gain skills like effective communication, ability to solve problems, working on time-
bound projects, and analyzing data.
From the past three years, I have been working in the Electrical Engineering department as a
Research Fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur. I initially worked on Power
converters for Grid applications. Some parts of this research work yielded a Transaction
publication titled “ISMC for Boost-Derived DC–DC–AC Converter: Mitigation of 2ω Ripple and
Uncertainty, and Improvement in Dynamic Performance” in IEEE Transactions on Power
Electronics. Later on, I switched my work from Grid applications to e2W and e3W application,
where I am working on the design and development of induction motor drive control for electric
two-wheeler and three-wheeler applications. While working on this I have gained a lot of
experience on the Delfino 28335 microcontrollers. The controlling part of the induction motor
drive was designed on this digital signal controller only. Recently One of my work got published
in the "IEEE Access" paper entitled " Control Strategies and Power Decoupling Topologies to
Mitigate 2ω-Ripple in Single-phase Inverters: A Review and Open Challenges". The kind of
research that is going on in our lab at IIT Jodhpur made me pursue further research in power
electronics. I think that a Ph.D. from a good University will provide the platform for that.
My professional tenure of more than three years as a Researcher at the Indian Institute of
Technology Jodhpur has not only left me a competent professional but also as a passionate aspirant
in the field of power electronic converters and drives. So far, I have already done some of the
theoretical and applied research in the aforementioned area. But to lead it to a meaningful
conclusion, I prefer to do further research in the area of power converters and their applications to
motor drives. My interest in this field has been nurtured for quite a while. It has been developed
by going through different articles and research papers on related topics and doing relevant
simulation and prototyping work.
After doing enough research, I found that your university fulfills my entire requirement with the
right mix of an extremely distinguished faculty, broad course curriculum, adequate facilities, and
a wide range of practical exposure. These are the factors that have made me choose your university.
If I am chosen for the program, I would be really great to take the advantage of the research
resources to their fullest extent and achieve major breakthroughs in research based on what I have
so far accomplished. I hope that my perspective studies at your prestigious university can solidify
my knowledge and bring into full play of my untapped intellectual capacities. I am looking for
some innovative research work that can lead to new breakthroughs. I expect that this program may
help me in building a solid foundation to undertake lifelong research in academia or industry. My
ultimate career goal is to head a research laboratory developing power electronic converters in a
wide area of applications. I seek to become a professor at a research-intensive university such that
I will have adequate resources to conduct my desired research. In addition to research, I am
interested in the pedagogical side of the professorship, which will allow me to serve as a mentor
and train the next generation of research scientists.
