ABSTRACT
This research is entitled Advantage and Disadvantage of Dynamic Learning Program

to the Academic Performance of Grade 11 STEM 03A of Phinma Upang College

Urdaneta. The purpose of the study is to determine the Advantage and Disadvantage of

Dynamic Learning Program to the Academic Performance of Grade 11 STEM 03A. The

problems formulated are the profile of the attitude and values of the respondents and the

suggested measures are to be done in order to sustain the Advantage and Disadvantage of

Dynamic Learning program. This study was conducted at Phinma Upang College

Urdaneta and is only limited to Grade 11 STEM 03A students. The method used

descriptive research design that aims to systematically investigate and identify the

existing relationship between variables in real life situation. Both female and Male are

the majority of the study and 16-17 years old. This research concludes that the

respondents will be based on what they are experiencing with the help of DLP.

v
Chapter 1

The Problem and its Background

Background of the Study

In the year of 2002 Dr.Christopher Bernido and Dr.Maria Victoria Bernido, who

became recipients of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award that introduce a

revolutionary way of teaching that they called Dynamic Learning Program (DLP). Is a

new teaching method has been implied.

Many schools has implemented the program which also features parallel classes,

portfolio-based notes, and a no-homework policy. A parallel learning where teachers

spend only 20 percent of class time introducing lessons to the students. The remaining 80

percent of the time allotted for students to answer the questions on worksheet based on

the lesson. Department of Education (DepED) curriculum, it designs to improve the

basic education given by the country’s multiple Socioeconomic and cultural constraints.

DLP is a teaching method that is geared towards developing each student to his or her

fullest potential.

By the end of a school year, DLP students would have answered up to 6,000 questions

in science, math, economics, history and other subjects, and because of so much work is

already done in class, there is no more need to do assignments at home. The

no-homework policy enables students to do chores at home, have family time, and sleep

early, also teachers can plan and prepare the activity sheets for the whole school year

before classes start using DLP modules designed by the Bernidos.

1
The method limits teachers participation by devoting a considerable part of class time

of a student-driven activities built around clear learning targets, aided by well-designed

learning plans, and performance-tracking tools.

The program uses locally available teaching aids and a “parallel classes scheme” in

which three simultaneous classes are handled by one expert teacher with the help of

facilitators. It resulted in students showing radical improvement in their performance in

national scholastic aptitude and university admission tests.

In Phinma Upang College Urdaneta applied the Dynamic Learning Program that

every students and teachers practicing this new learning style that would be help them to

understand the learning topic carefully. This method proves that every students would

have only fifteen to twenty minutes allotted time to focus on teachers discussion.

According to Philippine Daily Inquirer (2019), students are facing with the new

pedagogical perspectives like; the brains of the new generation of learners are wired

differently.Information now are readily accessible to learners and worldwide, Lack

qualified teachers to teach Science, Technology, English, and Mathematics. Based on

observations, teachers tend to use more often the lecture method that fosters passive

learning and dependency on teachers abilities. Thus, when Dr.Christopher Bernido and

Dr. Maria Victoria Bernido introduced the Dynamic Learning Program, both political

and educational leaders in the province did not hesitate to embrace the idea of adopting

and implementing the program immediately this SY 2019-2020.

2
Statement of the Problem

The main objective of this research is to determine the advantages and disadvantages

of Dynamic Learning Program to the academic performance in the Phinma UPang

College Urdaneta.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of respondent in terms of

a) Age

b) Mean age of the respondents

c) Gender

2. What are the advantage of the Dynamic Learning Program to the academic

performance of the student?

3. What are the disadvantage of the Dynamic Learning Program to the academic

performance of the student?

Purpose of the Study

The General purpose of this study is to know the different Advantages and

Disadvantages of Dynamic Learning Program of Grade 11 STEM 3A of Phinma Upang

College Urdaneta. It also aims to let even the different strands and sections of Phinma

Upang College Urdaneta to understand the Dynamic Learning Program and its purposes.

DLP, Is a process approach teaching methodology, stresses on the writing component to

keep the students actively participate in the learning process. In Dynamic Learning

3
Program, students write first the concepts before the lectures or discussions. This

enhances better comprehension, active participation in the actual class discussions, and

discipline.

The Dynamic Learning Program has many advantages and disadvantages. The

advantages are the following, to help students develop critical thinking, to make the

students more creative and to enhance the students comprehension and writing skills.

And the disadvantages are the following; some students might not be working on their

activity sheets, students will not become interested in participating, and the

communication competence will also be diminished. In the following chapter the

researchers will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Dynamic Learning

Program. The advantages and disadvantages that was included in this chapter is only a

quick discussion. By reading this Research, you will learn more about the advantages

and disadvantages of DLP especially how it is affecting the Grade 11 STEM 3A A.Y

2019-2020. The purpose of the researchers is to solve at least one of the problems of the

Grade 11 STEM 3A of PHINMA Upang College Urdaneta and to inform the upcoming

Grade 11 that will transfer to the said School. It has a purpose of not confusing the

upcoming grade 11 about the teaching method of the school and to not make them regret

for coming to the said school if they are not satisfied because of their new teaching

methods.

As to give knowledge to the parents about what their children is doing at their

school, and how the teacher’s are teaching them. The DLP aims to teach them to be

independent in their study and to encounter what the children’s likes and dislikes. The

Dynamic Learning Program aims to make the students more knowledgeable through

4
teaching them on how to study on their own and not pressuring them in every

discussions. DLP is a great program, but it is the students willingness to study on their

own and to aim higher using only their strength and a little help from their teachers.

Significance of the Study

Parents - Because they are the one who enrolled their child and the one paying their

children’s tuition fees; it is right for them to know what their children have been learning

and have been doing inside the school. It is right for them know the school system and

how it works. This study will help them to understand what and how the Dynamic

Learning Program can and can’t do and how it will affect their children’s learning

knowledge.

Students - Some students doesn’t understand yet how the school’s system work which is

the Dynamic Learning Program, this study is for them to understand the topic given. For

the students who attend the PHINMA UPANG College Urdaneta that doesn’t really

know how their schedules work, this study will make them understand and realize about

the things that can be affected by the Dynamic Learning Program. And how the teachers

are handling them.

Teachers - It’s very important for them to understand about the DLP because they are

the source of knowledge that the students need. It will help them manage all of the

classes they have to attend or teach. This study can help them manage their time and

organize every section that they have to teach.

5
Transfer Students - Every year, there are new students who will be transferring to the

School of PHINMA UPANG College Urdaneta, this study will help them know and

understand how the learning styles will be put in here, and how the teachers will handle

every class and how this school will help them move forward to a new journey.

Future Researchers - Findings of the study will serve as a basis for future researchers

and to include other Dynamic Learning styles which are not included in this study.

Research Question

To determine the advantages and disadvantages of Dynamic Learning Program to

the academic performance of Grade 11 STEM 3A of Phinma UPang College Urdaneta.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents a summary of literature and studies that are bearing to the

current study. The review of such literature and studies made by the researchers gave

a richer background and direction in the preparation, conduct and interpretation of

findings in the present study.

Related Literature

Foreign Literature

A composition entitled “Dynamic Learning Program” published by Bongalos et.

al. (2013) tackles that Dynamic Learning Program (DLP) is program centered on

activity based multi-domain learning that requires students to work independently, to

discover and understand the lesson on their own by reading the concept notes and by

doing the exercises before the lesson is discussed and explained. After about

forty-minute exercises, the teacher starts discussing the lesson.

This blend of approaches triggers students attention during class attendance and

at home when they do their homework. Presenting favourite section of the due chapter

by students, answering, and asking questions are all forms of Dynamic Learning.

7
Local Literature

It said by Araneta in his article named “Dynamic Learning Program helps

students cope with Sendong trauma” in 2012, unlike traditional educational system

where a teacher comes to a class and starts his magic performance of imparting

information into the dedicated, receiving minds of the students, dynamic learning

comes as a result of students efforts to gain and to find knowledge without much

resistance or struggle.

Teaching as a process cannot be taken independently in its entirely. With so

many ingredients needed, the most important is still the learner. The learner being in

the center of the teaching will influence to a great extent teaching. With the

advancement of information about the uniqueness of each learners, the multiple

intelligence theory and many more, teaching has to consider more factors in order to

be effective. Good teaching is one where the learner is stimulated to think, It embeds

a sound evaluation process (Bilbao et. al., 2008)

Local Studies

An article published by the Flaming Courier- the official student publication of

Phinma University of Pangasinan Senior High School Department written by Marecar

Veniegas (2016) with title “DLP-SCL: No homework, More seat work” states that

whether by aural, physical, social, logical, solitary, verbal or visual approach.

Students must have their own way of effectiveness when it come to learning.

Dynamic Learning Program which implements the Student Centered Learning

technique. This way of teaching was first developed and proposed by Christopher

Bernido and Ma. Victoria Bernido, the physicist couple who originally for the purpose

of helping students in Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental typhoon Sendong

victims get back on track after being traumatized. During the initial runs since it was

tested, the program improved the students performance mainly by giving them more

time for self-learning and drastically changing the role of teachers. It was initially

implemented due to lack of funds, lack of supplies, lab equipment and textbooks, yet

it was a low budget but effective approach as well.

The PHINMA University of Pangasinan, with over 200 schools in the Philippines,

implements the Dynamic Learning Program method for Senior High School students.

Through, the program was said to be beneficial than unfavorable, it is still undeniable

that issues between the students starts to emerge regarding the DLP - SCL. DLP -

SCL empirically aims for the best future that can offer for 21st century learners, of

course, by improving our quality education through systems based scientific

approach.

9
“The results from Grade 6 students that studied under the Central Visayan

Institute Foundation - Dynamic Learning Program (CVIF-DLP) framework are

consistent with the results we’ve been getting so far for high school where it was

initially implemented” said Ramon Isberto, head of Smart Public Affairs Group.

Smart has been helping the Bernidos propagate the innovate teaching framework to

help enhance the Philippine Education.

Based on their scientific studies, the Bernido came up with the formula “80%

student activity + 4 Academic Days + No homework” to improve the academic

performance of the student.

“The no-homework policy is also truth friendly unlike in the previous framework

when students would just only copy from each other, which defeats the purpose for

self-study. Students, particularly those in lower percentile segment, also realize that

they can actually do it as they accomplish their activity sheets. There was remarkable

increase in the number of achievers” said Elevera.

Foreign Studies

On the news released by Sun Star Philippines (2015) entitled “Smart pushes

Dynamic Learning integration into K to 12 Program”. K to 12 curriculum in line with

global standards. C & E Foundation, Inc. annually holds training roadshows all over

the country for private schools in aid of the K to 12 implementation of the Department

of Education (DepEd), particularly in training the teachers for senior high school.

DLP is one of the most effective ways to deliver instruction.

Academic Performance is the outcome of education which refers to the extent to

which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. It is

usually supplementing the consistent curricular in spite of being an outside movement

10
and exercises, accomplished for delight or reason. A student performing at his best

provide results of high grades correctly, he has a significant chance of landing a better

job after graduation. It the students fails to develop and improve his performance, it

will result in stagnation. That is the reason why extracurricular activities were created

to persuade student participation and encourage them to develop their intellect and

skill and avoid drop-outs (Shelton, 2016)

Parallel teaching occurs when teachers instruct, monitor, or facilitate the work of

different groups of students at the same time in classroom. A benefit of parallel

teaching is that it decreases the student - to - teacher ratio, allowing for increased

individualization, differentiation, and data collection to meet students needs.

Chapter 5
Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendation

This chapter presents the summary of the research work presented. The conclusions

drawn and the recommendation made as the outgrowth of the study. This study entitled

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dynamic Learning Program to the Academic

Performance of Grade 11 STEM03A of Phinma Upang College Urdaneta.

Summary of Findings

This study is a qualitative mixed method study which was designed to know

how it affects Dynamic Learning Program to the Advantages and Disadvantages to

the Academic of the students. Majority of the respondents are males which are 16-17

years old from 11 STEM 03A who are able to answer the self-made check

Performance list survey-questionnaire approved by Mrs. Debbie Jane R. Fernandez,

Practical Research 1 Adviser.

With the help of Dynamic Learning Program, students learn how to become

critical minded person and enhance their reading and writing skills. This study found

out that there was a time that the students get easily stressed because of too many

activity sheets to finish, the disadvantages of this, many of the students will limits

their social interaction of each others.

32
Conclusion

The researchers found the advantages and disadvantages of Dynamic Learning

Program to the academic performance of grade 11 STEM 3A. Therefore the researchers

conclude that the advantages of the Dynamic Learning Program to the academic

performance of grade 11 stem 3a are the following:

 The students showed radical improvement in their performance in national

scholarship aptitude and university admission tests.

 The students developed reading, writing and thinking skills by studying on their

own and having to answer questions in daily activity sheets.

 The students developed techniques that are related in answering activities

independently. They also developed critical thinking skills by having to study by

their own with only the aims and concept notes given by the teachers.

 The students’ grades gradually improved because the DLP enhanced their

comprehension, which made them understand better about their daily topics;

active participation in the actual class discussions, which made them get

familiarized with their topics even without reading their concept notes; discipline,

which made the students to review and get ready to their activities in the next

day.

 The students’ Academic performance improved because of the Dynamic

Learning Program by performing at their best providing results of high grades

correctly, they also have a significant chance of landing a better job after

graduation.

33
The researchers conclude that the disadvantages of the dynamic learning program

to the academic performance of grade 11 stem 3a are the following:

The students will fail in their subjects by not participating in performance tasks

because of losing interests in participation, having a low confidence in

suggesting possible answers or procedure, and lack of communication skills.

Some of the students will have a poor performance in their exams because they

will not be able to study well when some of their activity sheets went missing

and they don’t have something to ask help because of the lack of

communication skills.

Stagnation might occur if the students fails to develop and improve his

performance in academics resulting stress and breakdowns of students and

will fail to attend the class in the next day.

Recommendation

• Students

Dynamic learning program can help students to enhance their comprehension and writing

skills, it is better for the students to be more responsible for their school work and do

their best for a good academic performance outcomes.

34
•Teachers

Teachers should teach the lesson very well to the students because of the limited time

given to discuss the lesson, so that the students can fully understand the discussion.

•Future Researchers

Continue and expand this study to discover more important data and information that can

help to expand the knowledge of individuals.
